TIPS ON HIRING A ROOFING CONTRACTOR

About Hiring a Roofing ContractorRoof damage can cause a myriad of challenges to homeowners, especially during a heavy rainstorm. The water from rain can get into the home and ruin ceilings, walls and drywall. Water will continue to cause damage until the roof is replaced. Roofs can last 10 to 50 years, depending on the type of roof you have. However, heavy storms that produce a lot of hail and heavy winds can mean you may need to have roof repairs. Take your time searching for the right contractor because if he does a poor job, you could end up spending thousands. Check with Several Contractors  Check with several different roofing contractors to ensure that you get a fair price and to make sure that the contractor is on the up and up. Ask to see a license or company name and check online to see if there are any complaints with the Better Business Bureau. When you contact contractors for estimates, do not sign anything while you are only getting an estimate. Ask if the contractor has a business office or if he is part of another company. While there is nothing wrong with a contractor working out of his home, it may be to your advantage to work with one that is associated in some way to a larger company, especially if the at-home contractor is not licensed.  When to Pay Never pay for the roofing job upfront. Typically, a reputable contractor will have you pay for the work when it is completed, but may ask for a deposit upfront to cover the costs of materials, which is normal. If he asks you to pay for the entire job upfront, explain that you will pay after the job is finished. If this is not agreeable to the contractor, find another one. Be picky about the contractor you hire. Roofing takes know-how and skill; it is not something that just anyone can do. Get Everything in Writing Once you decide on a reputable contractor, get a written contract. If you were promised something, make sure it is included in the contract before you sign it. While reputable roofing contractors want everything in writing to protect themselves, fly-by-night contractors will not. When it comes to roofing, it is better to pay a little more to have the roof done correctly. You do not want to find six months down the road that your new roof is leaking, and when you call the contractor, finding the number has been disconnected. This would mean you would have to hire a new contractor to fix what the first contractor did not do correctly. You need your roof to protect your home. Take the time to hire a reputable contractor that has a solid reputation.NATIONAL ROOFING713-789-6400 ...read more
