The Candle Cottage

5.0

By Tiffany

My mother and I have been a BIG fan of the Candle Cottage. We have been customers with them since the day they opened the doors. As soon as you walk through the door the scent if unbelievable! The owner of the Candle Cottage is very sweet and is very proud of her store and should be. It started out in a tiny shop and has recently expanded to a bigger shop down the street from the old one. There are tons of people I talk to that love the candles and other little trinkets they have gotten from there. I understand that everyone has there own opinion about the Candle Cottage and the people that work there. If you have ever been into that store you will know they are always busy. So every person that walks through the door may not be greeted but IS respectfully helped. Several people I talk to have never had a problem going in there. I want to give big thumbs up to Shanna and the gang at The Candle Cottage in Nederland, TX!!! ...read more

I learned of the Candle Cottage from a segment of the 6 morning news w/ Dan/James. I've been going there for the past 3 yrs. My first few visits were good ones. I was in the store on 10/08/09 and the sales person (pregnant one) NEVER acknowleged me until I asked a question and then she went right back to counting down her register @ 5:15 p.m. and the store closes @ 6. I had bragged so much on the candles & the store that my friend decided to try them. She went there on 10/14/09 and had a very bad experience. The pregnant sales person & an older sales person NEVER offered to assist her, but when others entered they were greeted & assisted. This year when the owner goes on Channel 6 to rave about her new store, I'll be sure to call in to let Dan/James know that everyone is not greeted with assistance nor respect. The candles are not the same quality as before, I'm afraid to burn them for an extended amount time because of the smoke/soot. ...read more

It was exactly the kind of store I dream of. Decorative with wonderful smells when you walk in the door. I like to be able to find Christmas decor year round and it was too cute. The old fashioned candy & toys made the whole experience! ...read more

Lets All Go Green & Eco-Friendly

The term "Going Green" or using Eco-Friendly products has become a very popular term in The United States today.Consumers are becoming more concious about the planet and how they can all help out in some little way. I have found that one way, I can personally contribute to the healthiness of our  planet, is by burning only Soy Wax Candles instead of using other options that are on the market. Many people have already switched to Soy Wax Candles and may not even know they are helping the environment!  I think the reason why  switching to soy wax candles has caught on so quickly is because the results can be seen when burning a soy wax candle compared to burning a paraffin wax candle. Soy candles burn completely and evenly, and when burned correctly, you are not left with a tunnel down the center of your candle and half of the wax unmelted once you finish burning your candle which in all actuality is wasting almost half of the candle you spit your hard earned money buying, but unfortunately, like most paraffin candles. Soy candles also do not generally produce the ugly black smoke that paraffin candles do. (Please Note: All candles can produce soot&smoke if the wick is too high). The smoke is due to the fact that paraffin candles are made from petroleum products, which creates a sooty & smoky burn not related to the wicks, but to the wax. Soy wax candles on the other hand are made from 100% soy beans which is actually a organic vegetable product and does not emit black smoke when it is burned.  So if you are looking for a great eco-friendly product that shows that you have "gone green", you can purchase a soy candles or you could give a soy candle as a gift to a family member or friend. You will be glad that you did. Just think about how good it will feel to know that you are helping the environment, and you are also doing something you love to do anyway which is burning candles!! Just make sure that you choose to use SOY Candles!  I thank you for taking the time to read my blog post and the planet also thanks you too!!! ...read more

Candle safety

Here are some tips for Candle Safety.....Failure to follow these safety tips could result in a fire hazard or an injury.Never burn your candles unattended! Number 1 for safety.Keep out of reach of Children and/or pets. Little fingers, or tails wagging are not safe around an open flame. To avoid glass containers from shattering: never burn a candle that is in a container that is either cracked or chipped. The glass is weakened, and the heat can cause it to shatter.Always place your candles on a heat resistant surface when burning. You can use a trivet, saucer or a pot holder in a pinch. You may think that your counter is safe, but some countertops are not heat resistant. Jar candles can get very hot when burning. Also, furniture is generally not heat or flame resistant. Think before you put your hot candles anywhere that might not be safe.Keep wicks trimmed to avoid high flames and increased burning time. A large wick flame will make your candles burn faster and hotter, and could produce smoke from the increased wick size. Always trim wicks to 1/4" prior to burning.Keep wicks in the center of the container. If your wick is crooked, use a butter knife or spoon to push it back to the center for even burning.Avoid burning your candles in drafts. Drafts can occur from air conditioning units, fans, open windows or just from traffic in the area (people walking alot). Burning you candles in drafty areas will make your candles burn unevenly and quicker. If you notice a lop-sided burn, turn your candle every once in a while, so that the other side will melt also.Never burn candles around any flamable objects like curtains, drapes, papers, etc. These can very easily catch on fire if they drift into the area of the flame.Keep the candle, wax, and wick area free from wick trimmings, matches, or any flamable materials. These can catch on fire when the flame reaches them.Do not keep burning your candles once the metal "wick tab" is showing, if one is used.Never put a lid back on the container or jar until after the flame has been blown out and the container has had time to cool. This can cause cracks or fractures in the lid, due to the heat build-up, and could shatter if it's glass.I hope these Safety guidelines help you and that you might have found a tip or two here that you did not know! More information will be coming soon so stay tuned!!! ...read more

The Usefulness of Woodwick Candles!!

Everyone can appreciate the power of candles. If you haven’t heard of them, that’s alright, woodwick candles are a newer style of candle on the market. Instead of the cotton wick you are accustomed to seeing coming out of the center of candles, woodwick candles have just what the name says, a wick made out of wood. That small stick is your new wick. Here are a few benefits of a woodwick candle:When the wood burns, it will remind you of days in front of the fireplace or around the campfire. You will hear that old familiar crackling sound as the flame breaks apart the pieces of the wood that make up the candle wick.Second is the scent. Even without any scent in the candle, the wood wick will give off a scent of it’s own. It’s a light wood-burning scent. Woodwick candles can last 100 hours or more, depending on the size of the candle. It is important to note that the flame from woodwick candles can get higher than regular candlewick flames. When you want to up the impact of woodwick candles, you can add scents into the mix. While you already have the scent of burning wood coming from the candle, and for many people that is enough, if the candle itself is scented, that will add another layer of scent. Whether it’s a cold winter day, or the middle of the summer, you can still create a romantic winter getaway in your home by putting a series of woodwick candles in the fireplace. Once you light them up, you will have the soft, flickering glow of fire combined with the crackling sound of burning wood, and even a little bit of the scent that goes with the wood burning.  ...read more
