These fees help businesses process credit card bills. Merchants can charge consumers up to 4% of the transaction total for each individual sale. Much like taxes, the surcharges are added to the bill. Over time, this can actually add up and prove quite costly. Some people may even want to adjust their payment methods if the costs are too much. Awareness of These Fees Surcharge fees have been around for a long time. However, merchants did not have to highlight or mention such fees.Recent court litigationin the US means that businesses can now separate this fee for people using credit cards. These fees are sometimes called checkout fees that are added to consumer’s bills. After purchase, merchants have roughly 30 days to notify the companies and implement the surcharges. Consumers using a debit or prepaid card will not see the surcharge. Consumers Need to Pay Attention Consumers should pay attention to merchant notices that mention surcharges. Businesses need to let consumers know about these fees if a person wants to pay with credit cards. Educated consumers will use cash for purchases. To avoid unauthorized credit charges, people need to keep receipts and match them with credit card company statements. Most consumers today do not review their statements as closely as they should or read a website’s privacy policies. Taking the time to do this helps people make an educated decision when using their credit card. Consumers should always be aware of surcharge fees so they know where their money is going. Merchants are required to mention these fees so that people understand that they are being charged up to 4% extra for credit card processing.
