Stay Slim This Holiday Season!

There are so many holiday parties that center around food during the holidays from family feasts, office parties&brunches; with friends.  This will break your normal routine and encourage you to indulge in foods that are high in sugar, fat and low in the needed nutrients.  You must enjoy the holiday season with reason.  Take a look at my following 9 tips that will help you stay slim this holiday season. 1. Fill Up First- About an hour before you go to a holiday party or event, eat a nice crisp green salad, a bowl of fruit or fresh veggies.  This will fill you up somewhat so that when you arrive to the party you will have less of an appetite.  This is also a great counterbalance to less nutritional snacks you might want to try during your night out. 2. Sip On A Schedule- Another way to fill yourself up is to drink water.  You can drink sparkling water if you like beforehand, one while your dining and one before desert.  This will help you eat less of the dinner. 3. Tote Your Beverage- Always carry a low-cal beverage around with you at parties.  You may want to try flavored water.  This will help you keep your hands busy and away from the buffet or high calorie snacks on display for the taking. 4. Downsize Your Plate- It's a fact that if you eat from a smaller plate, you will eat less.  The ideal size plate is a salad plate, and have at least half of the plate filled with veggies.  One quarter can hold whole grains and the rest lean protein.   5. Go For the Crunch- Crunchy foods like carrot and celery sticks are excellent choices.  It will keep you fingers and mouth busy with crispy low-calorie foods.  You'll be less likely to indulge in less healthy choices. 6. Check Your Choices- We all know that crunchy foods tend to make us feel full, but the same is true of low-calorie foods that are high in water content.  Some examples are cucumbers, tomatoes, grapes, fish, whole grains&citrus fruits.  A quick tip is that most people need to consume about 150 calories every 3 hours or so to keep from overeating. 7. Reduce the Pile- Even a smaller size plate can be filled high and carry a hefty calorie wallop.  Keep the level of food on your plate to half an inch high or less. 8. Don't Go Hungry- Eat small, healthy meals or snacks of 150 calories or less several times per day.  That way, you don't get to the point of wanting to gorge. 9. Take a Day Off- Reward yourself for eating healthy by having one day that you select during the holidays to eat the foods you like on that day.  Go ahead and eat what you like!  But when the day is over, it's time to return to eating normally.  You can also incorporate this in your eating plan by designating one day of the week where you eat just one item you wouldn't ordinarily eat to reward yourself. There you have it! These are my 9 tips for staying slim during the holiday season.  Be sure to check out BistroMD to the right of this post!  It's my top pick for meal delivery plans on the market today.  Happy holidays to all of my readers and thank you for visiting the Health Warehouse! ...read more

Guess What, Juice Counts!

Don't get stressed out over your sugar, 4 ounces of juice qualifies as a serving of fruit&can help you stay slim & healthy.  Fruit should be a daily treat no matter what the season.  From summer peaches to winter oranges anytime is fruit time!  Did you know that two-thirds of adults miss the recommended two to four daily servings?  This isn't good, because research shows that eating plenty of fresh fruit can actually help you maintain a healthy weight, slash your risk of a stroke, heart disease, some cancers & even type 2 diabetes.   If you have trouble getting your daily requirement of fruit, raise your glass I have some good news juice counts!  You've probably seen many ads and hollywood stars promoting the lifestyle of "juicing" which is for good reason.  As long as you drink the right kind of juice in the right portion, you don't need to worry about it's sugar content.  You can use your ordinary blender as well to become proficient at creating all types of healthy juices that taste exceptional right in your own kitchen.  Here are four simple rules for making healthy fruit juice part of your meal plan: 1. Keep it real- Look on the label and it should say "100% juice", no exceptions.  This will assure that the only additives are water and possibly some vitamins such as ascorbic acid, which is a technical term for vitamin C.  When the label states organic, natural or real this verbiage doesn't guarantee 100% juice.   2. Eat your juice- When gauging portion size, remember that juice is a concentrated form of fruit and should be consumed in smaller quantities.  For example; one orange the size of a baseball packs about 60 calories.  You'll get that from just 4 ounces of juice.  What I recommend you do is use 4 ounce glasses to keep from over doing it, and always follow it with a glass of water. 3. Mix it up- Eating a wide variety of fruits has greater health benefits than just sticking to a few favorites.  There was a recent study at Colorado State University that found participants who ate items from 18 botanical families reaped the disease-fighting and anti-aging benefits of antioxidants much more than those who ate items from only 5.  Get creative and try a different variety of fruits or juice blends each week.  This will increase the range of antioxidants and new flavors possible. 4. Again, get creative- This should be a fun process of making your blend of juice and use it in other recipes as well.  For instance, include your blend of juice in your salad dressing or stir-fry sauce.  You can create a stir-fry sauce by mixing fresh squeezed orange juice with rice vinegar, grated ginger and crushed red pepper.   There you have it, your health tip for today!  Here are some of my recommendations on how to "Juice Up Your Grocery Shopping Cart" and a few ideas for you to try.  They're delicious, check it out: * R.W. Knudsen Family Organic Black Currant Nectar- Fights heart disease and cancer.  Make a smoothie by whipping 4 oz. black currant nectar with 4 oz. skim  milk, 4 oz. nonfat yogurt, 2 Tbsp cashew butter, 1/4 cup dry rolled oats and a pinch of ground cloves. * Welch's 100% Grape Juice- Keeps your immune system in peak condition.  Make a super drink by stirring 1/4 cup grape juice into fresh-brewed green tea using one cinnamon stick along with 1/4 tsp fresh grated citrus zest and 3 fresh basil leaves.
