Plan a Marketing Budget

Most businesses without a marketing plan also lack a marketing budget. And companies without both have the highest rate of failure. After all, would you run your personal life without a budget? If you said yes, you may be overextended with credit or on the verge of bankruptcy. If you own a small business, this can be avoided by simply creating and liv…ing with a well-conceived marketing budget. From the very beginning, and while you are writing your Marketing Plan, it is important to focus on the financial costs of implementation. A general rule of thumb says that at least 10% of your revenue should be designated for your marketing efforts. That means dollars specifically pinpointed for Web site design and maintenance, logo design and brand development, marketing collateral, both print and electronic, and paying someone, if you don’t have the time, skills, or desire to do so, to handle all of your Public Relations needs. But make sure when allocating money for marketing that you also have a means for tracking your ROI. If your ROI is low after several months of trying a particular strategy, go back to your marketing plan and look at trying something different. If your ROI is high, stay with what is working, but go back to your plan and budget and accelerate to the next phase. Establish an Image

You can recognize the McDonald’s arches while whizzing by on the highway. Likewise, there are plenty of products that you recognize by their packaging or logo. Image counts when it comes to advertising and promoting your business. Too many advertisers do not work to build a consistent image, and they’re missing the chance to make an impression on prospective customers. ...read more

Tip of the Day

Develop a Marketing Plan Most entrepreneurs or small companies are understandably eager to see a return on the investment of time and money they have made in their business. Ready to start cashing in, they either hit the pavement running or hire a salesperson to do it for them. But a business trying to sell a service or product, without first creating a marketing plan…, is much like a marathon runner with no finish line. At first, you may feel like you are moving forward and passing some of your competitors by, but sooner or later you’ll find yourself running in circles; frustrated, exhausted and sadly disillusioned by an idea that not too long ago created the exact opposite effect. What is a marketing plan and why create one? Because it’s the foundation of your business and it helps you design your product and service, identify your target audience, and provide a roadmap to head you towards your final destination: Success. But equally important, a marketing plan provides the specific details needed to increase visibility, expand your customer base, and provide quantifiable methods to measure your return on investment (ROI). ...read more

The Two Basic Types of Advertising

There are two different basic types of advertising available; Long term and short term. Long term advertising is any type of advertising that lasts a month or longer. Some examples are: Magnetic signs for cars or vans, the back windows or tailgates of vehicles, roadside billboards, online blogs, online backlinks, YouTube videos showcasing your services or products, are just …a few options. Short term advertising is any type of advertising that lasts less than a month. Some examples are: Newspaper ads, Radio ads, promotional events, flyers, mailers, Val-pak, or time sensitive coupons are also just a few. Some of the short term advertising can used for both short and long term. Using flyers or mailers to distribute an open ended coupon on a set amount weekly, running for a month or two. There are also monthly multi-ad flyer and mailer programs available in quantities of 2500 up to 50,000+ per month. Contact us for more information on these or any of our other services! ...read more

Common Advertising Misconceptions

If there is one mistake small businesses make more often than any other it’s, “What ever is left over, we’ll use for advertising.”Marketing and advertising is an investment, not an expense. I know it sure seems like an expense when writing the check, but trust me it’s not. Without enough money put aside for advertising your sales can go down and you suddenly have less and less for promotion. When do you advertise the most? For most businesses it’s the first day of business. Don’t you have a Grand Opening, balloons, flyers, ads, on-site radio stations, contests, and prizes? Did the income from sales pay for that? No, it didn’t. You advertise most when you need business. You advertise more when you don’t. An average cost of advertising is usually 1 to 5% of gross sales, which can vary according to location, local advertising rates, and industry. Car dealers need more advertising than funeral homes. * In order to be successful, your advertising must provide a consumer benefit or solve a problem.* That benefit or solution must be wanted by the consumer.* The product or service you are offering must be tied directly to that benefit or solution.* The benefit or solution must be distinctly communicated through medial advertising. In other words, be clear, forget the advertising glitz and make sure the message isn’t lost in the ad. A small-budget advertiser doesn’t have the ”deep pockets” to develop big advertising campaigns. Some time you need to break the rules to be noticed. Avis did it by admitting they were “Number 2″ in the car rental business and that campaign took them from 6th place to second place. When they stopped that campaign they dropped back to 6th again. Budget conscious advertisers must achieve top results for their advertising dollar. Expand your dollars by adopting some creative techniques. ...read more

Misleading or False Salesperson Statements

“BEWARE of any company that sells advertisement space on a door hanger with multiple advertisers: Low prices result in low response rates. These companies are NOT in the door-to-door delivery business. They will outsource your delivery and lose all control of the delivery process. Protect yourself and do your research.” O.K. The first part of… this statement is 100% false, the second part is only half true. First let’s talk about the “low prices result in low response rates” part of this. NOT TRUE AT ALL! This statement was specifically designed to make you believe that you have to spend a large amount of money to effectively advertise your business. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. If the multi-ad flyer or mailer is done correctly, then it can be very effective. We have spent a lot of time talking to home owners about this, along with market research on this very subject. The fact is that most of the potential customers would prefer a single, smaller door hanger, flyer or mailer with multiple ads versus 3 or 4 and even up to 10 single ad flyers, door hangers or mailers. When they have that many on their door they rarely ever look at them. They have also stated that they don’t like large (the 36 – 48 inch tall big foot) multi-ad door hangers or the monthly envelopes stuffed full of advertisements that are only partially for businesses in their area, because it takes a while to go through all the ads on a door hanger that large or stuffed in an envelope. They prefer to have something smaller that they can look at quickly. Market research indicates that there is virtually no difference in response between single ads and multi ads. This is why several large corporate stores are utilizing these forms of advertisements. When a potential customer looks at a multi-ad advertisement, the service or product that they are looking for or interested in stands out to them, no differently than if it was a single ad advertisement. But again, the final decision on what is best for your business is entirely up to you. The second part of this statement is only half true. While there are several multi ad advertisers that will outsource the distribution, there are some that don’t. We can only speak for how we operate. We do not outsource out distribution of the flyers and door hangers, so we are always in control of your ad campaign from start to finish. When it comes to the mailers, of course we use the postal service. Also know that any company that is selling multi ad mailers are also using the postal service. At that point you should be updated on when the printing is completed, when the mailers are dropped off at the post office and a time frame when the mailers will go out. If you’re not informed of any of part of that process, beware. ...read more
