I got arrested for domestic violence, which almost ruined my reputation. It's surprising how many people are willing to see you as guilty even before they know the whole story. I've never been arrested before, and this was one of the most mortifying moments in my life. I don't hit women, and I'm fortunate that Matt Shrum was very experienced and understanding when he handled my case. As a gay man in Texas, I have to be more of an example for my community, and when my ex accused me of hitting him...oh my god. I was now the gay man who liked to hit his partner. I was going to break up with my partner and order him out of the house, since I had given him at least 2 months to get his act together. I found coke in his bag and he accused me of violating his privacy and punched me. But he calls the cop and says I hit him. Thanks to Matt, my life and reputation is back on track.
