Like almost every other automaker these days, Ford is having a tough time in Europe right now, and here in the States, its per-share stock price is lagging, but that isn't stopping the automaker from exceeding some of its goals. The Detroit Free Press reports that sales of the company's EcoBoost turbocharged and direct-injected engines are going beyond expectations. The Blue Oval's signature powerplants have made it to a wide variety ofFord and Lincoln products, from larger vehicles like theExplorer,Taurus and MKTto smaller models like the newEscape and Focus ST. The smaller, more efficient EcoBoost powerplants will make the Ford lineup more efficient and a program to cut down the amount of platforms the automaker uses globally is helping to trim costs. The2013 Ford Fusion, available soon atFord of Murfreesboro, is more refined, top fuel economy estimates and will take Ford to the top of the midsize class. For a few years now, theFord Fusionhas been one of America's most popular midsize sedans. Ford will be hoping to keep that trend going for 2013, as the redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion will have dramatic new styling as well as an expanded lineup that will include three different gas engines, a gas-electric hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The basic engine for the Fusion will be the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that carries over from the current model and makes 170 horsepower. From here, shoppers can choose between a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The economical option will be a 1.6-liter "EcoBoost" engine that will generate 179 hp and promise to deliver fuel economy estimates of 26 mpg city/37 mpg highway. Replacing a V6 performance option for the Fusion will be a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that will produce 237 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. The latter will be paired with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system for enhanced handling capabilities. Ford will also offer two Fusion hybrid models. The Fusion Hybrid pairs the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack, and Ford expects the hybrid to return 47 mpg in the city and 44 on the highway -- better than the Toyota Camry. The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, meanwhile, will also use the 2.0-liter four and electric motor for 185 combined hp and more than 100 MPGe (an efficiency standard reserved for electric vehicles and hybrids). Ford says that's better than the Chevrolet Volt's 92 MPGe or the 87 MPGe expected from the new Prius plug-in hybrid. Underneath, the Fusion is based on a new platform that Ford says is stiffer and safer than before. Electric-assist power steering comes standard on all models as part of the car's focus on improved efficiency. A bold grille, more curvaceous sheet metal and a longer, slightly wider body give the new Fusion a sportier look than its predecessor. Technology will again be at the forefront. The2013 Ford Fusionwill offer advanced safety features typically absent in this segment, including adaptive cruise control, parking assist, blind-spot detection and lane-keeping assist, which beeps and sends feedback through the steering wheel to wandering drivers. Ford Sync and the next generation of MyFord Touch will also be offered. The2013 Fusion and Fusion Hybridmodels go on sale this fall, while the Fusion Energi should be at dealers by the end of the year. From show floor to evacuation route,Ford of Murfreesborois proud one concept vehicle got the chance to test it’s meddle in the real world. While concept vehicles are fun to look at, that is usually about as useful as they get, but that wasn’t the case with the Ford F-550 Super Duty rescue concept, which had an unscheduled date with a real world disaster. When multiple tornadoes ripped through Texas on April 3, this Ford F-550 rescue concept was called into action to aid the cleanup cause. Luckily, the truck is a functional unit, as all of the safety systems on the truck are fully operational, though they had been untested before the storm. The building of the F-550 rescue truck was handled by NewScope Marketing, an independent company that looks after marketing and branding for businesses. The local fire department of Granbury, Texas, was called on to oversee the building of the truck, so when the storms first hit, the department called NewScope and informed them that the concept would be helpful for the rescue effort. This F-550 is packed with safety features, and weighs in at 19,500 lb gross weight. It is equipped with thermal imaging that can detect heat sources from up to half a mile away, doppler radar, more than 100 LED lights, a front bumper winch and a generator that can fully power a small house. The size of the truck was also an advantage because full-size fire trucks had trouble fitting in to some of the spots that the F-550 could go. The truck was used to light up houses, check close by weather patterns and thanks to its small size it was used mainly as a transport vehicle, taking supplies to the men on the front lines. Ford is making it easier to access tablet devices in its cars, enabling users of iPad, Kindle, Nook and other tablets to control their devices with their voices instead of their hands. The move is bound to set safety advocates atwitter, who argue there are already too many distractions behind the wheel. Just last month the issue again took front stage after the death of 18-year-old Taylor Sauer, who crashed her car into a tanker truck while texting. Ford, however, said the upgrade of its MyFord Touch system is out of concern for driver safety."Drivers are bringing these devices into the car already," said Alan Hall, a spokesman for Ford. "We're allowing them to access the content in a safer way."Ford began shipping upgrades to its voice-activated MyFord Touch entertainment system on Monday, with the tablet compatibility built in. The automaker has taken a big hit to its quality reputation because of MyFord Touch, which consumers have complained is slow, unreliable and hard to use. The upgrade to MyFord Touch and its underlying SYNC technology allows more devices to work with voice activation or through controls on the steering wheel, although most still won't charge. Devices including the iPad, Kindle Fire, HP Touchpad, Nook Color and Sony Tablet S need more electricity than Ford's outlets provide. Ford hopes the iPad 3, set to be revealed today, will be compatible with the upgrade, Ostrowski said. He also said that Ford engineers will have to order iPad 3s like everyone else to find out.
