Exercise vs weight loss

Exercise Will Not Help You Lose Weight 8/26/2009 9:52:42 AM For years I have been telling my patients not to start an exercise program when they begin the Smart For Life Cookie Diet. If they already have been exercising, I tell them to keep it steady – not to increase or decrease the amount. I knew from experience and from a few studies I read, but finally the mainstream media has picked it up. It will surely make my life easier with my patients.   In the August 17, 2009 issue ofTime Magazine(www.time.com), a very well-researched and written article makes the following points:   ·Exercise does not help you lose weight; in fact, post-exercise hunger may make you eat more calories than you burned exercising and ultimately make you gain weight. For the last decade, we joined more gyms and last year, we spent $19 billion in gym memberships, yet we are getting fatter.   ·Post-Exercise Hunger: Many people reward themselves with calorie-rich food post-exercise which outweighs the benefits of the exercise they just completed. For example, while exercising on a treadmill, you may burn 250 calories over 30 minutes, but the latte you consumed to reward yourself in 8 minutes gave you 450 calories – a net gain of 200 calories.   ·This also applies to kids: They too get hungry after exercise and then eat more. Fast food restaurants know this – Why do you think they have the play areas in these fast food restaurants? They could have placed video games for less space and money. The restaurants are counting on these hungry kids asking for a second serving of fries or a refreshing milk shake.   ·So should you stop exercising? The answer is complicated but here is my view based on my experiences and hundreds of articles and research read:    If you are overweight and do not exercise, do not start exercising…yet. First lose the weight by cutting calories and dieting (I hate that word too, but it works). Once you lose the weight, use exercise to maintain it and keep your heart and body healthy.   If you are at your goal weight, you should exercise regularly to keep your heart and body healthy all the while maintaining your weight.   Remember a good exercise program should always involve cardiovascular and weight training. Be sure to do both.   And remember, no after-exercise treat/reward, unless it is a Smart For Life diet cookie. I always find eating half or a whole Smart For Life diet cookie cuts my post-exercise hunger and keeps me in line.   Dr. Sass Sasson Moulavi, M.D. Medical Director Smart For Life Cookie Diet   ...read more
