Couples receive two mother's albums, a 12 X 16 custom album (instead of the 8 X 10 offered in Premiere ), an engagement session, a framed and matted 12 X 12 or 13x19 photo from your engagement session for guests to sign during your wedding reception. Plus a Bridal or TTD Session or your one year anniversary shoot. Brides who choose this coverage want to remember the day in all its splendor and capture some of the new moments that occur as newlyweds. Engagement SessionPrice: $175Usually lasting between two and three hours, an engagement session allows you to capture the essence of your relationship prior to your wedding day. Shades of Grey travels to multiple locations, photographing you in beautiful and significant settings. You're given all images from the session on a DVD and full rights to the images. Bridal SessionPrice: $175Getting away from wedding guests for an opportune photo on top of a mountain is no easy task. To make it a little easier, many brides-to-be utilize a bridal session. With the bridal session, Shades of Grey travels to multiple locations with the bride-to-be, wedding dress in tow, for two or three hours. The bride-to-be is given all images from the session on a DVD and full rights to the images. Trash The DressPrice: $175Since the dawn of time, brides have carefully washed and packed their wedding dresses, gently setting them in a cedar closet or stuffing them in the attic, secretly hoping that one day their daughters would want to wear the dress at their own weddings. Over the past century, disheartened mothers have learned their daughters often don't wear their mothers' wedding gowns for two reasons: 1) moms and daughters aren't always built the same and 2) styles change. Recently, brides began looking for an alternate way to memorialize their wedding gowns. And trash the dress (TTD) was born. When Shades of Grey trashes your dress, you'll go to multiple locations, get wet and/or dirty, and change how you look at wedding gowns forever. In other words, you'll have a blast, and your dress will be all the worse for your wear. Not surprisingly, TTD isn't just for newlyweds. Many happily married women have pulled their aging wedding gowns out of hiding for a TTD session, and they were thrilled with the results. (For less timid brides, there is no need to worry. Despite the name, all TTD sessions do not result in great damage or any to the gown if you choose.) The bride is given all images from the session on a DVD and full rights to the images. Maternity, Infant, and ChildPrice: $175With all maternity, infant, and child packages, parents-to-be are provided a minimum of 30 high-resolution images on a DVD, as well as full rights to the images.Price: $300Mothers-to-be can book a maternity session and add on a newborn session. This is particularly popular with mothers-to-be who want to make sure the biggest moments are captured: pregnancy and birth. Moment in TimeMoment in Time is for people who want a single maternity session or a single session for their infants or children. There is no time limit, but most maternity sessions last a couple hours, infant sessions last two to three hours, and kid sessions last 90 minutes. Most sessions take place in the studio and outside, and parents or parents-to-be are given a DVD of at least 30 images, with full rights to the images. Grey MilestonesPrice: $575A great way to document your child's development during the first year, Grey Milestones includes four photo shoots spread throughout the year. We recommend the first session take place within the first week of life, when your newborn is still in that teeny tiny newborn stage. The remaining three sessions can be scheduled at three, nine, and 12 months of age—or when your child hits important milestones you would like to remember. Smiling, sitting up, crawling, and your child's first birthday are all milestones you may want to document, and Grey Milestones makes it possible. Womb to YearPrice: $900Newborns are constantly developing and changing. Almost overnight, a newborn's personality and profile completely change. That's where Monthly Moments comes in. With this package, you'll receive a maternity session and 12 sessions (one each month) during the first year of your infant's life. You'll also get a discount off of a first year of life album, an album with photos chosen by you and designed by Shades of Grey to showcase your bundle of joy's development from pregnancy to one year of life. Mix & MatchPrice: $400Want a few sessions for your baby or Child, but aren't quite sure when? Our Mix and Match package allows you to schedule three sessions any time you want. Jennifer's Headshots

Jennifer and Brandon dropped by yesterday to have some headshots done of Jennifer. We also tried to grab a few of the kids. Here are a few of my favorites from the session. The challenge here was shooting a few different looks for Jennifer's headshots, Jen and Brandon together, the kids individually, then the family together -- all in the span of about and hour and a half. The white and thunder grey seamless worked really well here. I was able to produce several different looks on the same two backgrounds simply by varying the shutter speed, my subject's proximity to the BG, and the use of a BG light. Here are a few of my favorites. I'm particularly happy with the headshots on white. This was a simply two-light setup. 1 AB1600 with 7" reflector on the white background, 1 AB1600 into 2'x3' softbox on the camera axis and just in front of the subject and a silver reflector below. ...read more

Gap Kids

Gap Kids No. I haven't unexpectedly landed a lucrative international contract. But I did shoot Sean and Katelyn in my basement against a sheet of seamless thunder grey. And the results were rather Gappish, IMHO. I used an AB1600 into a 2'x3' softbox as key, with a reflector on shadow side as fill. And an AB1600 with 20 degree grid on the background. All of these were shot with the Nikon's 85 1.4. ...read more

Summer Shoots: Part I

I can't imagine why, when there are so many accomplished, working pros out there blogging technique, but I do get the occasional request to explain my lighting (jaredwielfaert.com). So, for reasons not entirely unrelated to search engine optimization, I will use this space to share the wealth. Such as it is. And this, only with the proviso that you could do much better. Check, for eg., Strobist.com, Joe McNally, and Robert Benson to get started. First, a bit of background. Last summer, before I moved to Cleveland, TN, I conducted a series of shoots in Toronto with the goal of experimenting with location lighting and building my portfolio. None of these shoots was for a particular purpose; only one of them paid. I simply took a couple hundred bucks, rented and borrowed some equipment, and, with the help of a few friends, began making pictures. Shoot 1: Ballerina on the Rock My first shoot that didn't involve bribing the kids to say cheese or shooting my dad holding a cellphone to his head was of a ballerina I'd contacted through Craigslist. I had posted an add calling for "Dancers, athletes, yoga intructors, etc." to help me work on my port. The incredible Camille, one of about 20 who replied, was perfect for what I had in mind. I'd been wanting for some time to shoot a ballerina on some giant granite rocks in a waterfront park overlooking Lake Ontario. Camille showed up on an unusually cold May morning (8 degrees C), put on some cool dresses ,and scaled the highest of the rocks, about 8' off the ground. I put my Alien Bee 1600 into a 22" beauty dish on a sandbagged, 13' lightstand, with an assistant holding on for dear life, and hoisted it to its full length. In back of the rock I put up two stands, each with two Nikon Speedlights stacked together, all lights set to 1/2 power. Everything was fired via Pocket Wizard radio remotes (PWs). We more or less needed all of this power to fight the sun, which can more powerful and omnipresent on a mildly overcast day than direct sun (which can simply be blocked out of the frame.) The goal was to expose Camille properly, while underexposing the sky by 1 -2 stops. To do this, I set my shutter speed to 1/250th, the D200s fastest sync speed, and found the smallest aperture at which my lights could properly expose my subject. Which, in this case, ranged between f11 and f16, depending on the subject's distance from the lights as she moved around. I didn't have nearly enough power to get the sky as dark as I would have liked, but ended up with fairly nice balance between subject and sky. (In this, my only setup shot, the righthand speedlights failed to fire. I may have been relying on optical triggers at this point. By the end of the shoot, I had the AB and 3 of the 4 speedlights on PWs, which I had rented or borrowed for the shoot.) When I first asked Camille to scale the precipice I was planning on a much wider crop, with the height and severity of the rock to add to the shot. But some busyness on both sides -- power lines, trees, and other rocks -- broke up the composition. I should have given up the idea at that point and moved to safer rocks nearby, where Camille could move uninhibited by the height and unevenness of the rock. But I stuck to my original location, but with a much tighter crop, and ended up with more static images, as a result. Still with the help of some fortunate moments with the wind and some white tulle, we managed to grab a few really neat frames, given my relative inexperience doing this type of shooting. Here are a few of my favorites: ...read more

Tommy and Jessica: Engagement Shoot

This past weekend I shot an "engagement shoot" with some old friends. Tommy and Jessica are graduates of the University of Tennessee and alum of the Pride of the Southland Band. We wanted to incorporate some of that history into the shoot, while having as much fun as possible. We began on the intramural athletic field, which doubles as the band's practice field. My assistant and I arrived about 30 minutes early and set up some lights in order to do a few set shots on the field. We wanted to ambitiously light at least a few of the band images to elevate the look a bit and make it more evocative of performance. I first shot a few individual portraits, with 2 AB1600 monolights in back of the subjects for rimlight, and 1 SB800 into silver umbrella as key. I didn't like the look of the hard rimlights, so I softened up the monolights with a 2'x3' softbox and 22" beauty dish. This more or less gave us the look we were after. We then shot the two together on opposite ends of the frame, the beauty dish on Jessica and the softbox on Tommy. I really love the way these turned out. They have a nice editorial feel, which might ordinarily be a bit too bright and contrasty for an engagement shoot. But because of the band theme, I think it works well here. The rest of our shoot was dedicated to a more traditional take on the genre. First, while my assistant was loading everything back up, I shot the couple playing football with Tommy's trumpet. Which made for some really cool shots. Then, with about an hour and a half left before dark, we moved quickly through five more locations, using mostly natural light, reflectors, and a single, handheld speedlight into shoot-through umbrella. ...read more

Family Portraits Session: The Mungers

This past weekend, I did a location shoot with a lovely family here in Cleveland, TN. The Munger's were good sports, working patiently outside on a blustery December afternoon, with grandma and grandpa pitching in now and then to keep my umbrellas from becoming sails. Our goal was to produce some nice individual portraits of the kids and also a family portrait, if time permitted. I pulled out the AlienBees for some portraits of the kids in the front yard, using my (by now) customary beauty dish-softbox crosslighting. The big lights allowed us to bring down the already dark ambient to produce some really nice effects. After a few of these, the kids began to turn purple from the windchill. So we moved things inside to the Munger's beautiful kitchen table. The window light inside the kitchen was exquisite, but much too low to get usable results at ISO 100, even with the excellent 85 1.4. The client wanted nice, clean files that will print really big, if necessary, so I wanted to avoid getting my D200's rather noisy ISO 400. So I placed an AB1600 with a softbox outside on the deck to fire through the window, blinds, and curtains. Shooting through the window helped to further diffuse the softbox and also saved us some space to move around in inside the kitchen. To give a bit of separation on the shadow side, I put a silver reflector to the side of and slightly behind the subject. We were all really happy with the results. Finally, we turned to the family portrait. The kitchen table was a bit cramped to pull off a group shot. So we moved back outside on the deck, just as the sky was beginning to break up a bit. Moving quickly, I got the softbox up and everyone in place in time to grab 4 or 5 frames, before the sky went dark again. This is my favorite: ...read more

I can't say enough about how much fun and how easy this photography fundraiser was! I am so glad I heard about this company from a member in our P.T.O group who had done it before with her church. They sent a top-notch photographer, the picture prices were great, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I had an easy time getting people to help me do the fundraiser because they could earn free pictures based on how many coupons they sold. I wish this company lots of success and will do everything I can to pass the word on to other groups looking for a good fundraiser. ...read more

I could tell from the time I called to ask about doing a fundraiser with this company that there were truly good people working here. They sent me everything I needed to do my own fundraiser and there was no cost to it. The dress-up clothes they brought were adorable and the photographs were precious and very reasonably priced so most people bought extras. We will definitely do this fundraiser again since we had such a great experience. (The bonus money we earned was really nice!) I later found out this company has been in business almost 30 years and was owned by a Christian family. I recommend this company to everyone looking for a good moneymaking fundraiser. ...read more
