Spats Restauran and Pub

A guy friend and I came here on a Saturday night around 9 p.m. and we were let RIGHT in to a table. Where else on Thayer St in Providence that time on a Saturday will you get right to a table?! The menu is diverse and while a lot of it is "bar food", it's pretty healthy. I looked around at some other people's plates and the salads look big. I got a buffalo chicken quesadilla that was not only on a crispy WHEAT tortilla, but the chicken was not fried and tasteless - it was pure, roasted, white meat chicken that seemed hand pulled with a taste of rotisserie underneath the distinct taste of Frank's Red Hot. Also, I'm not a big drinker, but I decided to order their huge Sangria (they also have a similar size large frozen Margarita) and it was delicious. Oh yeah, and you get to keep the bottle! They have high def TV's all around the bar and restaurant, the bathroom was clean, the decor was nice without being "too" fancy for a bar, it's right off of Thayer Street and it won't take you forever to get service. Highly recommended and nothing dive-y about it! ...read more
Mainelli's Restaurant

After seeing the recent makeover of this restaurant on "Restaurant: Impossible", I expected only good things. I was surprised and disappointed. The main course items I ordered (from the old menu, they were no longer using the new menu from the makeover) tasted not just mediocre, but awful; the red sauce was overly acidic, bitter, almost rancid...my friend said it tasted like strained canned tomatoes, nothing more. His wife had the caprese salad...it was tasteless, served with light orange tomato slices, and NO BASIL. The side of pasta with vodka sauce was even worse, the "sauce" was nothing more than a watery white liquid that tasted like indistinct salted broth. I can say with all honesty that this was the worst food I can remember ever having eaten at a restaurant. How anyone can make pasta and sauce taste so bad is hard to imagine, especially considering it's an Italian restaurant in Providence. Robert Irvine, back to the drawing board for these guys. ...read more
