Alliance Computer Stores Inc

1.0

By MattWalker

So my grandfather, may he rest in piece, who died this past may loved Alliance. I purchased a desktop from them and had issues with it. The problem was that it was overheating and the alarm on it would go off and start beeping. So he took it back to Alliance and they unpluged the alarm, I thing they must have unplugged the case speaker, I didn't investigate. Since that my grandparents have been running their PC without the cover on the case to allow more air in and when the PC would shut down to protect itself they would vacuum it out and it would run again. Well since this has been happening since my grandfather has passed away I was talking to my grandmother and told her I suspected the only thing that needed done was that I needed to use silver thermal paste on the heatsync and processor and that would solve the problem. Well, she decided she didn't want to deal with the PC anymore and she was just gonna use her laptop. I took the PC and backed up the HD and reinstalled windows and drivers all from discs provided by Alliance. As I'm installing windows updates the computer randomly shuts off so i install a temperature monitor. During the next round of windows updates i watch the temperature go from constanct 72c to 80c and it shuts down. I proceed to pull the heatsync and find white thermal compund smeared all over the heatsync. I clean the heatsync and processor and apply arctic silver thermal paste that I always use and recommend for maximum heat dissapation. The computer boots to and runs at 61c and there are no problems installing updates anymore. How can a computer shop be so clueless? I would not recommend to anyone. ...read more

Buchanan Brian

1.0

By Sean D.

My family is personal friends with Brian Buchanan of PC Expert, and we were once neighbors as well. My experiences with him personally were always positive, until business came into play. I asked him to get a quote to fix an Alienware laptop for a friend. Originally (upon doing the research himself), he quoted 200-250 for a new motherboard. Once my friend raised the money, I called back. This time he denied giving that quote and quoted "at least 500." I pointed out the used model goes for 750, fully operational. He agreed on that point. I went online and found the part for 100. I called back, and he was not in. A service tech asked me if he could help me, I said no. Asked for when Brian would be in and the guy laughed and hung up. I called back, asked for his name - I was then insulted and hung up on again. Brian is a liar, and I know him personally. I am very aware of the personal swindling he does with people, as I've worked for him and seen him cheat customers. ...read more

Why your old PC is much faster than you ever thought.

I'll keep this short and sweet. Most older computers are running old operating systems. Usually Windows XP or Vista. These systems suffer from viruses and many other malicious pieces of software. They are also pretty heavy in terms of effort it takes for your hardware to run the software. Think of your operating system like a pickup truck. If you truck is always out of tune and with 500 pounds in the bed of that truck your 0-60 mph time is pretty slow. But if your truck is fined tuned, modern and there isn't 500 pounds in the bed then your 0-60 time is really quick. You can do it all with lightweight Linux, and of course we think our setup is the right mix for almost everyone. Quick PC Tips

These are general tips I've learned over the years. 1. Keep unnecessary stuff off your pc. The cleaner your PC the better. Try to pick a set of programs, not multiple programs that do the same thing. You learn quicker and your PC will love you for it. Also keep programs from starting up on startup. 2. Do some research on a program before you buy it or install it. A couple google searches and reading should do the trick. If your still not sure get a pro. 3. Remember "To good to be true" is just that. Never sign up for anything or install something that seems like its just too good. This is the number one rule thats broken and causes computers and the Internet to be a very ugly place at times. And last but not least. Make sure to have security provisions setup on your computer hardware, whether its Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux based computer. ...read more
