About Salisbury, PA
Salisbury, Pa. in Somerset County was founded April 5th,1795 by John Markley. The tract of land known as "John's Fancy", was given to his son Joseph. John and his family came from Wurtemberg, Germany in August of 1749. The town has also been known as Brushtown and Salsburrich . The settlers decided on Salsburrich because there were salt deposits in the area. The name became Salisbury when the first post office was established. In 1848, Salisbury endured an epidemic of Typhoid Fever. Even though only 13 people died, it was considered a high amount because the population was only 200. In 1861, an epidemic of Diphtheria happened and the Yowler family lost all seven of their children. Hurricane Hazel struck Salisbury October 13-15th, 1954. The town suffered massive flooding and washed out roads. Today local businesses include Camp Albryoca and Napa Auto Parts.
