Punxsutawney is a borough in Jefferson County, northeast of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, there were 6,271 people living in Punxsutawney. The name of the borough means "sand flies" and the first people to settle in Punxsutawney were in the late 1790's. Students attend the Punxsutawney Area School District. Punxsutawney also offers a junior college called Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Punxsutawney is most known for its inhabitant, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, who predicts whether or not there will be 6 more weeks of winter on February 2.
