Animal Friends

The previous lady stating that Animal Friends lies about them being a no kill shelter probably didn't have enough information available so she assumes the worst. She assumes that no news is bad news. However I agree that this is a no kill shelter. There are always some exceptions to all no kill shelters. The rule being that either the animals health is so far gone that the only humane thing to do is to put the animal down or the dogs excessive aggressive nature is so bad that it is a danger to other people and animals around it. The latter being an extreme case of aggressiveness. I would assume that a shelter that claims to be "no kill" cannot take the risk of actually putting down animals. If word got out that a shelter claimed to be no kill and in fact put down animals on a regular basis, it would loose it's credibility and also it's support. Everybody has their own story and this lady has had a bad experience with them. To her, I hope you have found at least some closure and belief that your pet is ok.\t\n\t\nHowever, Animal Friends does take animals that have behavioral issues that might turn people away, and keep them out of sight. The general public doesn't get to see these animals. After all, they have a pleasing image to uphold. \t\n\t\nAs I do believe in Animal Friends purpose, I do not care for the way they go about some of the things they do. Sure it is a very nice facility. Much nicer than some of the other shelters in the Pittsburgh area. But the few times I have been there considering adoptions they have been very rude to me and my wife, especially the older lady that works behind the counter. She either doesn't want to bother with us or just doesn't care enough. Also, I seriously think that they profile people that walk through their door. I don't think that they provide the same adoption experience to everyone. They get enough people through their doors on a regular basis that they think justifies how they interact with people. My wife and I ended up adopting from a rescue instead. We couldn't be happier. We felt that we were helping a dog more if we adopted from somewhere else. After all, Animal Friends is a very nice looking facility.\t\n\t\nIf Animal Friends would be nicer to potential adopters, be more helpful, and put all of their animals up for adoption instead of only the more adoptable looking ones then I would gladly give them 5 stars. I think 2 stars is fair. 1 star for their nice facility, and 1 star for their purpose. But money and purpose alone don't justify the way people are treated. Remember that. \t\n\t\nNow, you may comment and agree with me or call me a liar and rebut my review. Either way, thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope it helps in making your decision. Adopting an animal is something that requires a lot of care and consideration. Where you adopt from is part of that equation. I hope you have a more enjoyable experience with them then I had. \t\n\t\nTake the time and check out Animal Friends for yourself and make your own decision, and ask questions about the other animals that aren't being shown. \t\n\t\n**Please get your dog or cat from a rescue, adoption center, or reputable breeder. Please don't support pet store and puppy mills.**\t\n ...read more

Adopted a canine and the people were great to deal with. I visit their facility and they are always clean and seem responsible. I only regret not getting my other dogs from them. Many people think they cannot get a nice animal from the shelter or they will be disfunctional. Not the case. My adoption went smooth and our new dog fit like a glove into our family of other pets. ...read more

My sister referred me to the company and I checked on their website to find a Husky that I had been longing for. I found that they had one Alaskan Husky that seemed right up my alley! So, I filled out the online application and came in two days later. \t\n\t\nThe woman at the counter explained she could NOT find my application and that I had to wait in line. Waiting "in line" involves holding a beeper they give you until you're paged to come back to the front desk. She told me they still had the Husky I had been interested in and that it's an hour wait until I would get paged. \t\n\t\nSo, I waited. From 12:30 to 2:30. All the while, I saw another family filling out an application at the desk FOR the Husky I was interested in... which defeated the purpose of me filling one out online/ahead of time. \t\n\t\nBetween 12:30 and 2:30, I came back up to the desk asking if they had any luck finding my application and that I was sorry to bug them because they seemed busy. The woman told me I had to wait for my beeper to go off before she could help me with anything. Wonderful. \t\n\t\nFinally, around 2:40, my beeper went off! Finally!... Only to be told they still could not find my application. So what exactly was I waiting around for?\t\n\t\nAfter the woman pulled it up (it was never printed and no one thought to look back online where I originally filled it out), she told me that the Husky is still here.. asked if I had any other dogs, cats, etc.. usual questions. Finally, she asks if I have had any personal experience with Huskies. \t\n\t\nI told her I personally didn't, but my mother has owned two before and I'm living at home, so.\t\n\t\nThis wasn't good enough, she explained that it was policy that potential owners MUST have experience with Huskies before adopting. She asked if there were any other dogs I was interested in.\t\n\t\nIn this woman's defense, she was super apologetic about what happened, apologized and rhetorically asked why the other woman failed to mention that they have a Husky policy before making me wait 2 hours, and she tried to best to make ends meet. But, I wasn't interested in any other dogs. \t\n\t\nSo, I don't know. It can be a great place if you meet their standards, find what you're looking for, and able to be very patient with the staff. Other than that.. meh. I'm sure the other family who filled out the form days after I did were able to get the dog. What a ripoff. ...read more
