"Free" Frequent Flier Tickets Could Cost You Hundreds of Dollars!
On many domsetic carriers you'll be paying government taxes and fees when you use your award tickets. And if you change an award ticket you're likely to pay $75 to $100 to do so. On American, Delta, and US Airways, you'd be charged $150 for a change. You could also be charged from $15 to $30, depending on the aiurline, to book your award ticket by phone! But that's cheap compared to what you might pay using award tickets on foreign carriers. With foreign carriers you're likely to pay fuel surcharges which can amount to hundreds of dollars! While American carriers are not yet assessing fuel surcharges, foreign carriers are! Among the foreign carriers assessing these charges are British Airways, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, and more. If you have a choice of booking your award ticket on a domestic carrier vs. a foreign carrier who partner or are in the same global alliance, booking on the domestic carrier could save you from paying the fuel surcharges.
