Digital Printing vs. Offset Printing

Kodak's NexPress is competitive in pricing, offers better color, and is environmentally friendly. The NexPress has the same screening options as conventional offset printing but the NexPress has a larger color range than offset because of the more vibrant dry ink.  Pantone spot colors are more readily available for offset printing and therefore less expensive then the NexPress but most of the Pantone colors can be produced using the Kodak's vibrant dry inks.  Another advantage of digital printing is the ultraviolet stability compared to offset printing. How many times have you gone to a restaurant with lots of windows and color prints on the wall are made up of blues, greens and yellows. Magenta offset ink is very sensitive to sun light and fades quickly but this is not the case with digital ink. The NexPress is giving offset a run for the money on quantities up to 5000 and that number will get larger as time goes on. Kodak's press offers flexibility that an offset press will never be able to do. Every page off a press has to be the same as the one before it. The NexPress can vary the copy, colors, and images from page to page. Each piece customized to get the best reception from the reader. Offset printing is still the most cost effective choice when printing large quantities of the same image but doesn't get the response rates of a personalized piece from the NexPress. Even "Green" offset printing with soy based inks and alcohol free fountain solution is still toxic compared to the Kodak NexPress. Inks made of soy beans still contain oil and the unused ink must be disposed off as toxic waste just like regular oil based inks. The printing industry has made great progress in reducing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) but has not eliminated them. And let's not forget about all the chemicals it takes to clean a press and rags that must be disposed off. The only byproduct of the NexPress is water. No VOC's, no toxic waste, and mostly recyclable containers.  An offset press must run hundreds of sheets just to registers the colors and then adjust the ink levels to match the proof. With the NexPress you do not have any of this waste called spoilage. Unlike digital printing of the past, the NexPress offers different coating options and dimensional inks. Designers can take their ideas to the next level without paying for expensive setups and long runs. Designing and printing a high-end piece has never been easier. Today's digital presses are competing with offset printing and winning. Jay Templeton Precision Digit-All Solutions http://www.pdasinc.com ...read more
