BEWARE! Does not stand behind their products & refused a refund on a product defective at purchase.\t\n\t\nPurchased a glass bottle, but noticed the glass chipped when we got home. We returned to exchange for a new one, but noticed that many of the others also had this problem, which made them no longer useful for storing liquids.\t\n\t\nThey would not refund the money and only offered store credit, which makes this a scam in my opinion. A reputable shop would stand behind their products. Unfortunately the purchase was made with cash, otherwise I would have contested the CC charge.\t\n\t\nIts a shame, as I would like to support a local shop, but this utter failure of basic customer service makes this impossible. You have been warned. ...read more

Bed Bath & Beyond

This store is awful! Worst customer service I have ever experienced! My husband and I decided to register at Bed Bath and Beyond for our wedding because they have a wide selection, and heard they had great customer service. After our wedding we ended up receiving thousands of dollars in gifts from BB&B and only had a few minor things to return. We were told by all of our friends who has registered their previously that they do cash returns, sounded great to us since our few returns were still perfectly wrapped in their boxes and we wanted to purchase somewhere else. The horribly rude people at customer service told us they did not do cash returns. We argued for a few minutes, and explained this is what we have been told, they sharply said no, so we left with a gift card. We called customer service and they told us YES, they indeed do cash returns and this store was wrong and that the regional manager would contact us. He did, apologized a thousand times over and we got our money back. 2 weeks later, we needed to return one more thing, asked for cash back and customer service inside BB&B literally laughed in my husband ...read more

Sur La Table

All I wanted was a package of goat's milk caramels for my boyfriend for Valentine's day. (he collects goats) After some research online, I quickly learned goat's milk caramels are hard to find! But I found them at the cheapest price from SurLa Table so I eagerly placed my order. Within a day or so, I got the standard 'your item is ready to be shipped, we will send the tracking info soon.' email. A week and a half later, I still hadn't received any additional shipping notices or tracking info. So I sent an inquiry through their customer service center asking for an update on my order, that it was a gift for Valentine's day. The response was that the caramels were no longer available in the warehouse but there might still be some in the stores and if I really wanted, I could talk to customer service and see if they could ship it from one that had them in stock. :( What really angers me was that 2 weeks were wasted in my search for an alternate source for these caramels. With Valentine's day a week away - I can't afford speedy shipping to have them shipped in from another state. The least they could have done was send an email telling me they were not available or maybe update their online catalog so that people aren't ordering things they don't have! Is that too much to ask for? For SurLa Table, it is. ...read more

How To Child Proof The Garden

When someone chooses to begin a family, it symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in life. There is lots of planning that goes into being sure your home is prepared for your new arrival and an important consideration is safety around the house. This can be especially true for youngsters in their younger years as they take their first steps and start to explore the world around them. You can easily uncover information about safety within the home but don’t forget to make your garden safe as well. Allow me to share some tips that will help you safeguard your children in the garden. Optimally, you should plan any sort of upgrades in advance of the new child’s appearance since you will probably have more time and money to get things done. Initially, you need to think about the different ways to get into your garden and the ease with which a child could access them. You can easily think we will consistently pay attention to where they are but it only takes a moment of distraction for a child to go where they should not. Within the best conditions, the area behind your house should be totally closed in so that you can prevent your little ones from easily escaping. When it comes to potential hazards in the garden, the most obvious danger is definitely any water features you currently have. Unfortunately, a tiny child can drown in simply a few inches of water. Because of this, you should most likely remove any ponds or at least keep them covered so that no children can fall in. It is a good idea to go for a walk round your garden to consider if there are any other unsafe areas for very young children. High steps, loose paving pieces or objects a child could run into are just some examples of this. Actually, it’s not a bad idea to look at things at a child’s eye level. Another aspect of your garden that you could possibly not have taken into consideration is any vegetation that could be harmful for children. Youngsters have a habit of automatically inserting objects into their mouths; for that reason, you must make sure that all your garden vegetation is nonpoisonous if taken by mouth. In addition, you’ll find plants and shrubs that may have sharp thorns so these will need removing or at least cutting right back. Should you have pets, you need to make certain no objectionable residues remain around the yard as small children are notorious for exploring items they find on the ground. If you’re able to prepare in advance, the time you spend outdoors with your children can be very enjoyable. When the outdoor area is as secure as you want, it’s time to set up a special area where your children can happily play without your worrying about their safety. ...read more

How To Store Coffee To Preserve Its Fresh Quality Flavor And Aroma

You need to know a little about coffee and how it gets it flavor in order to know understand how to store coffee to preserve it's freshness.Coffee Flavor When coffee is freshly roasted, the oils are noticeable on the beans. Most of the flavor is contained within this oil which is also responsible for the dark and oily color on the roasted beans. When these oils come in contact with air, light, heat and moisture, the flavor and aroma begin to deteriorate. These are the enemies of roasted coffee beans. Coffee beans, at room temperature, undergo chemical change and emit carbon dioxide. Air oxidizes the beans and makes them go stale very quickly. Moisture, such as what the coffee beans are exposed to in freezing, will decrease the flavor as long as it is exposed to it. The oils collected on the skin of the beans get hardened and crack due to freezing. To make matters worse, ground coffee deteriorates much faster than whole beans do.  With more surface area exposed to the air, the more likely it will become stale if not consumed within a week.  Storing Coffee To preserve the flavor intact for longer periods it should be stored fresh which is imperative. Coffee containers should be kept away from air and moisture. Coffee should never be stored in the freezer. With the development of packaging industry, packing of coffee in air tight bags was started.  In fact the process of roasting includes cleaning, roasting, cooling, grinding and packaging. Although vacuum and nitrogen injection packaging was introduced to slow down the deterioration process, once the packages were opened the process of getting stale could not be controlled. To have a longer life of coffee, once the coffee package has been opened, it should be immediately transferred to an airtight container and stored at room temperature. Whole beans are the preferred choice for keeping it fresh and brewing.   Not only will whole beans have a longer shelf life, one should only grind enough coffee as will be used.  Grinding your coffee as you use it will give you the flavor and the aroma that you want from your coffee. The National Coffee Association of U.S.A. recommends that coffee pods and beans be stored in airtight glasses or ceramic containers in a dark and cool place.  If the coffee is in large quantity, they should be packed in a number of small airtight bags.
