Medical Transcription and Your EMR

While more and more clinics are turning to EMRs to streamline their document management system, did you know not all EMRs are able to export demographics or import medical records from your transcription service?  Be sure when researching a new EMR that lab results, radiology and transcription are able to be imported into your new system. We recently began working with a client that found out, much to their dismay, their EMR had no ability to populate its system with old medical records - so this clinic now has both paper and EMR records - meaning their staff must look in two places to get patient encounter information.  Also, many clinics are promised they can 'do their own transcription' and save 'thousands in transcripiton costs.'  Be wary of this.  From the experience of our clients, what they've found out is that by having your physicians and nurses type and code reports, they are LOSING money.  While a physician or nurse is busy typing a medical report, what aren't they doing?  That's right - seeing patients. This translates to billable hours going down - errors going up (how many doctors do you know that are good typists?), and the clinic's profits actually go down.  What has worked for our clients that have moved forward with an EMR is to have the doctors/nurses put the physical exam information and/or med lists in place via the EMR, and let us type the rest.  Physical exams are often very repetitive and clinics can easily create templates that doctors/nurses can quickly and easily modify.  The bottom line is: Yes, EMRs are a wonderful tool, but be careful which one you move forward with.  Ask questions.  Check references.  And remember, the goal of your new EMR is to save you money and time, not create headaches.  ...read more
