Rick Hug CPA & Associates
By stylist45 at Citysearch May 26, 2010
If it didn't happen to me personally I'd think it was a episode of a hidden camera show. I was referred by my financial advisor, who has repeatedly given me excellent recommendations. (That is the only reason I did not trust my instincts and leave after my first visit.) From the first phone call, there was a series of miscommunication and unprofessional behaviors. The receptionist didn't book my appt when I called, but said she would have someone contact me. I specifically said I was referred to Rick and scheduled with him. Turns out they had booked us with an associate. I said I wasn't opposed to that, but did not like being surprised. I was told I could reschedule with Rick but, ""He is much more expensive"". She then leads us to a room, that is already occupied and an uncomfortable stand off with the occupant ensues. I arrive with a fully itemized spreadsheet of all my numbers, with corresponding receipts and references. (I only use a pro because we have our own businesses). We are asked a few clarifying questions and leave. It was really bothering me how badly things had been handled as a new client, so I called the associate to tell her why it made me feel uncomfortable. She told me she could transfer me to the front desk, because they were the ones who messed up. I hung up after being left on hold so long I missed 2 business calls. We did get one call from the owner Rick who asked a few good questions that allowed 1 more deduction. When I called about picking up our taxes I was told they would be e-filed. We always send registered mail. Again I said, no one has discussed this, not opposed, but want to know how I get evidence to show IRS received them. ""I don't know how it works, I'll transfer you to the front"". I then ask for my bill and I'm quoted $125 MORE than what I paid my previous guy who was a PARTNER in the firm. I question her on this and am told it took 5 hrs to prepare my taxes, I say absolutely bogus! I've been there with my previous accountant when it is put in the computer (20 mins), maybe another hour to review. Aside from the info I gave them, they only needed to add the one additional deduction and IRA info. I demand to talk to the owner and tell him my entire experience. He says he'll lower the bill to what I paid last year, but recommends I go back to the other guy. I say fine, pick up my stuff and plan to never contact them again. NOT SO LUCKY. I get a phone call last week asking if I can resend my check because the one I gave them (MARCH 31st), was LEFT IN THE OWNERS PANTS AND WENT THRU THE WASH!!!! Can I please send another check? I am appalled and swear I must be being PUNKED. I ask, SERIOUSLY? Even if this IS the truth, should you be telling people this? I decide if they are going to be this incompetent, I am not rushing to the mailbox. This week I get a call from the owner saying he knows I recently got a call about my check that went thru the wash, then mid way it changes to dry cleaners, then it becomes that it was at their bank this whole time and held for the last 6 weeks, and since it just went thru, can I let them know if I have sent another check? Where is the Camera? These are people who do numbers for a living? You don't know for 6 weeks that you are missing a deposit? Then magically it's back? WOW. I just don't know how they are in business. I have never posted a review, but had to post this in hopes to save some poor soul the trouble. ...read more

How Accepting Credit Cards Can Help Your Business
Accept credit cardsand your company can increase its customers, maximize sales and conductbusinessover the Internet fast and efficiently.Credit cardsare a very convenient form of payment for customers and allow the user to delay payment based on the amount of credit extended by the financial institution or retail store. Many consumers also prefer usingcredit cardsbecause they can often earn airline miles or rewards such as cash-back refunds every time they use theircredit cardsto make a purchase. How Accepting Credit Cards Can Help Your BusinessMerchant account providers, also known as independent service organizations, orISOs, set up special accounts that enable your business toaccept credit cards. These accounts, called merchant accounts, are established with a financial institution that is partnered with theISO. Many merchant accounts give you the opportunity to connect your company’s website with a secure payment gateway that will enable your business to process credit card payments online. Merchant account providers can also offer software applications or equipment that you may need to accept credit card transactions as well as other payment acceptance solutions such as debit card processing and online checks. Advantages of Accepting Credit Cards in Real-TimeYou will need to carefully consider whether you want to set up real-time or deferred processing. There are advantages to each option, depending on your business needs. Real time processing enables your customers’cards to be acceptedor denied immediately. With deferred processing, the order is sent to your business first so that you can process the order. The greatest benefit of real-time processing lies in the customers’ instantaneous results. This is particularly important if you are in the business of selling goods and services that are delivered quickly, like information or software packages. And, real-time processing provides the ability to automate certain business operations so that you can free yourself or your employees to focus on other jobs. Real-timecredit card processingis flexible in that you can automatically or manually process your orders. For example, if a customer decides to order over the phone rather than online, you’d simply need to log onto the virtual terminal of the real-time account and enter the customer’s information manually. Another useful payment option that you can set up with real-time processing is repeat billing, so that you can automatically charge your customer accounts at specific pre-set times. Most customers prefer real-time processing because immediate feedback will be received on theircard approval. Also, if they make a mistake while inputting their information, like an incorrect expiration date, they’ll be notified immediately and be able to conveniently fix the error in the original transaction. This can have a major impact on your sales because customers are not as apt to revisit to your site to re-enter theircredit cardinformation after the original sale. Benefits of Deferred Credit Card ProcessingDeferredcredit cardprocessing, also called offline sales, may be the best way toaccept credit cardsat your business if you don’t offer your products online. With deferred processing, your orders can be manually examined to fix any erroneous information before shipping them to your customers. If you are in the business of shipping products to foreign countries, and you discover that the network of the credit card issuer is experiencing problems due to time zone differences or other difficulties, you will have the ability to call in and approve the transactions rather than decline them. Real-time processing does not allow for this option. Accept Credit Cards with an Online Shopping CartIf you plan onaccepting credit card paymentsonline, after you have established a secure server, you will need to set up an online shopping cart. This will display order forms where the customer can enter in their credit card information, billing and shipping addresses. The shopping cart feature will also allow you to store customers’ order history and calculate costs. If you decide to go with real-time credit card processing, you will need to ensure that your shopping cart can work with your real-time gateway. Preventing ChargebacksChargebacks, which occur when transactions are reversed, are the primary drawback of accepting credit card payments. Instead of receiving funds from the customer, the amount of the order will be deducted from your merchant account. Chargebacks can occur for many reasons, such as double-charging, credit card expiration, bank error, customer disputes, and fraud. Besides losing money, there is a danger of losing your merchant account if too many chargebacks are issued against your business. You can avoid chargebacks by following a few simple guidelines. Be sure to use address verification to help you prevent fraud. If you receive a suspicious order, follow up with the customer immediately. And finally, always include an invoice in the package when you ship products to your customers. ...read more
