I never thought I would care too much one way or the other about a dental office but I LOVE Portsmouth Dental Care! Dr. Turk and Aaron have done such a great job with my ortho work, bonding & cleanings. They are super sweet, thorough and never try to push me into doing something I don't need. I'm moving out of the state and still plan to keep Dr. Turk as my dentist. I really can't say enough good things about them! ...read more

Portland Invisalign | The Periodontal Disease – Diabetes Connection

In our mouths, we have numerous forms of bacteria. Some are helpful and some are harmful. Bacteria in the mouth can be helpful because it helps to sanitize the mouth and breaks down food particles. However, too much bacteria can lead to the development of gum disease which can be damaging to your oral health.    When the bacteria start to collect in the mouth, it can create a sticky colorless substance known as “plaque” that sticks on to your teeth. If the plaque is not removed during brushing or flossing, the particle can harden and turn in to tartar. Over time, plaque and tartar becomes more difficult to remove at home so a professional cleaningwith the dentist is important for maintaining your oral health and preventing decay and periodontal (gum) disease.  The longer the plaque and tartar remain on the teeth, the more harm they can cause to your oral health. Eventually plaque and tartar will create a mild form of gum disease called Gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gum tissue. Ideally, routine cleanings and proper oral care can prevent gingivitis from developing. Oncegum diseaseis prevalent, only your dentist can help to maintain the disease and prevent it from progressing.   In cases where gingivitis is not treated, it can then advance to periodontal disease. With periodontal disease, the inflammation now affects the soft tissue (gums) and the tooth and if left unattended, it can cause the tooth to loosen or fall out.   Having periodontal disease also can affect your overall bodily health. In many studies, there have been connections with periodontal disease to diabetes and heart disease. It is important to regularly see the dentist for a routine, professional cleaning and examination to prevent gum disease.  With periodontal disease, the dentist has solutions to help you prevent and maintain gum disease. A common solution for controlling periodontal disease is a deep dental cleaning, which can be performed by yourdentistor certified hygienist.   Downtown Dental Associates, LLP of Portland 1221 SW Yamhill St., Suite 310, Portland, OR 97205 (503) 227-0958 http://portlandor.dental/ ...read more

Portland Dentist | One Simple Treatment Can Save Your Child’s Smile

Our dentistmight suggest dental sealants for your child during a visit to our office. Sealants are a way to protect your teeth against decay. With any dental treatment, it helps to understand the procedure and how it can impact your child’s oral health.  Why Get Sealants?  Sealants help to prevent tooth decay. Sealants are applied on the back teeth, where decay is most likely to develop. Our dentistwill often recommend sealants for children and teens, but adults may benefit from sealants, as well.    The further your teeth are in the back of your mouth, the more difficult it can be to maintain the proper hygiene needed to keep them healthy. Sealants can prevent up to 80% of decay within the first two years alone. After 4 years, sealants continue to prevent as much as 50% of decay. Children without sealants are more than three times as likely to develop tooth decay than those with sealants.    When Should You Get Them?  Your child's first molars usually become visible around age 6, with the second set around age 12. You will want to talk to us about the best course of action for keeping molars healthy. Sealants are most effective when they are done as soon as the molars break through. Regular examinations with our dentist will determine the best time to have sealants applied.    What Should I Expect?  Sealants are one of the simplest treatments we perform in our office. There is generally no discomfort associated with this process. We will first thoroughly clean your child's teeth, and then use a special gel. The gel is then cleaned off before the sealant is applied. A small blue light is used to harden the sealant in a matter of moments.    What Concerns Should I Have?  There are no side-effects from sealants, and allergic reactions are extremely rare. However, talk toour doctorabout any allergies your child has so we can discuss the best possible course of action.    Next Steps  Sealants last for years before needing to be reapplied. It is important to schedule regular visits toour officeso thatour dentistcan check the condition of the sealants and teeth on an ongoing basis. If your child had sealants several years ago and you are unsure if they should be reapplied, schedule an appointment with us.    For more tips on keeping teeth healthy and for questions about dental sealants, contact our office.  Downtown Dental Associates, LLP 1221 SW Yamhill St., Suite 310 Portland, OR 97205 Phone: (503) 227-0958 Email: info@ddaportland.com ...read more

Portland Dentist | Oral Health and Cancer

There are over 12 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. There are a large variety of different kinds of cancer, some of which are more preventable than others. It might seem obvious that practicing good oral health and avoiding tobacco and other harmful substances can help protect you from the risk of oral cancer. However, there are other types of cancer that can be prevented through good oral care as well.    Dental Care and Oral Cancer  While it’s long been known that tobacco and heavy alcohol use are the main causes of oral, head, and neck cancer, poor oral health has recently been added to the list. A 2007 study published in American Journal of Epidemiology found that poor mouth health and missing teeth were strongly linked to the development of oral cancer. Likewise, patients with good oral health were found to be far less likely to develop oral cancer. If you have been diagnosed with oral cancer, know that common oral health problems such as gum disease and tooth decay could be making the condition worse. Visiting our dental office regularly for professional cleanings, examinations, and oral cancer screenings to help catch signs of oral cancer early and make treatment easier and more effective.    Oral Health and Other Cancers  Poor oral health has been shown to be tied to other types of cancers outside of the mouth. For example, a recent study conducted by NYU Langone Health's Perlmutter Cancer Center found that certain types of bacteria found in patients with gum disease was tied to a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer. While esophageal cancer only accounts for 1% of new cancer cases diagnosed annually, over 90% of patients will die of the disease. Untreated gum disease opens up the tissues around the teeth to bacterial infection, allowing these harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream and infect other parts of the patient’s body. Maintaining optimal oral health can help protect you from this threat.    Your oral health effects much more than just your mouth. If you’re not taking care of your teeth, tongue, and gums, you could significantly increase your risk of developing cancer without even realizing it. If you’d like to learn more about the connection between oral health and cancer, contact our dental team to schedule an examination and cleaning today!   ...read more
