I dropped my computer and broke all sorts of pieces. I took it to Geek Squad who tride to get me to buy a new computer from them saying it couldn't be fixed. I didn't like the answer and took it to Geekoids who said the same think. This thing cost me over a 1000 bucks, so these answers were not what I wanted to hear.Later, while I was eating lunch I saw another computer place across the parking lot so, what do I have to lose by spending a few minutes and walking a couple feet. When I walked into Mad Dog Computer they had very pained expressions when looking at my computer. After inspecting the computer they said that it would be difficult and costly but it could be fixed. When they said costly, I was figuring 500$ or more but the guestimate I got was $200-300. I was amazed! They explained that some of the parts needed might not be available or be very expensive and they might need to do some of what they called "non-standard" repairs and they wouldn't know until they took it apart to find out exactly what was needed.I got a call from the next day with a list of what was broken and the parts that were availble. It turned out that everything was available except the case bottom and was told that they could epoxy most of that back together and that it would work but not necessilary look pretty.Several days later I picked up my computer and it worked! It has a few war wounds from the crash but those ad character :) The lid opens and closes and everything works. I love these guys and especially like that they are willing to do what others say can't be done. The total cost was a little under $250 (right in the range they quoted).I know the motivation of the other shops was probably to make more money by selling me another computer but the guys at Mad Dog seem to be willing to do the dirty jobs others won't to actually serve the needs of the clients.I hope to never NEED to go back to Mad Dog but it makes me feel good that there are still people around who care about the customer instead of taking the easy way out. ...read more

Scammers are calling to scare you into giving them your money!

Scammers are calling people to tell them that their computer has been hacked.  A real, legitimate company has no access to your computer and would not be able to tell if your computer was hacked or not before you called them.  These people are trying to get access to your computer to show you their bogus claim that your computer has been accessed by someone.  Hang up on them immediately!!   Do not give them access to your computer, and do not give them any money.  If you do give in and give them access to your computer, they will simply be showing you normal computer operation logs that have lots of colored notifications, some that are in red, and they will try to persuade you that these prove you've been hacked.  It is all a bogus and misleading scam that is designed to scare you into doing what they want you to do.  Be forwarned so that you are ready when they call and simply hang up on them when they call and do nothing that they tell you to do. Fake browser warnings dupe users into downloading 'scareware'!

Scammers are spoofing the anti-malware warnings of popular browsers to dupe Windows users into downloading fake security software, Symantec said Monday. According to the FBI, rogue security makers have made at least $150 million by duping the public! Little wonder, then, that the fake security software industry is huge. During the 12 months from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009, more than 250 different phony programs tried to get on more than 43 million machines worldwide, Symantec said in a report issued last October. Several malicious Web sites are displaying phony versions of the alerts that Google's Chrome and Mozilla's Firefox present when users encounter pages suspected of hosting attack code. Rather than simply warn users that the page they're about to visit may be dangerous -- as do the legitimate alerts -- the sham versions also include a prominent message that suggests downloading a browser security update. In reality, no browser offers its users security updates from its anti-malware warning screen. Anyone who accepts the update actually downloads bogus software, often called "scareware" because it bombards users with endless fictitious infection warnings until people pay $40 to $50 to buy the useless program. Even the cautious can be nailed by these sites. Users who refuse the mock updates are assaulted by a multi-exploit toolkit that includes attack code for 10 different vulnerabilities in Windows, Adobe Reader, Internet Explorer and Java. Windows PCs that have been kept up-to-date with bug patches will be immune from the exploit kit, however. To keep your computer immune from these exploit kits, Mad Dog Computer Services offers Monthly PC Service Plans which include updating your Windows OS with all bug patches, maintaining legitimate anti-malware programs, and many more services to fight off attacks such as these. Mad Dog Computer Services also recommends that you turn off your computer by pressing the power button when any window pops-up saying that your computer is infected and the message doesn't come from the anti-malware program you have installed or security update warnings from your browser's anti-malware warning screen pop-up as these are bogus warnings.Doing anything other than pushing the power button to turn off your computer will download the bogus software, which is almost always a piece of malware that infects your computer. Our recommendation will often stop the malware from being downloaded, but that isn't always the case. If you do get a malware (viruses, spyware, exploit kit, etc.) infection we can help you with our Flat-Rate In-Shop Malware Removal and Tune-Up service.Mad Dog Computer Repair and Services – One Call…We Do It All!  Home of Flat-Rate Computer Services.Mad Dog Computer Repair and Services is located in Tigard, Oregon. Website:http://www.maddogpdx.com/Original Story By Gregg Keizer.  ComputerWorld.com.  October 5, 2010 07:03 AM ET ...read more
