Athena, Oregon is located in the Umatilla County. As of 2007 it has a population of 1,221 people. It is in the Pendleton- Hermiston metropolitan area. This area is very well known for it's fresh farm produce, most popularly- watermelon. Athena is also known as Mud Flats or Yellow Dog by the locals. Legend has been stated that Athena gets its name from having a similar topography as Athens, Greece. Each year, Athena holds the Caledonian Games which have been tradition since 1914. The Scots heritage is quite evident, even in Athena's only high school, Weston-McEwen High School, where there is a Pipe Band featuring bag pipes and drums. Athena is very big on antiques as is apparent with their annual Hodaka vintage motorcycle reunion held in Athena each year. Because of this love of antiques, Somewhere In Time Antique Store is a popular place to visit. This area of Oregon is a a very religious area, a reason that its population is so small.
