Today's Little Known Facts Story
Home PageFun FactsLKF in the U.S.More LKF FunHere is Today'sLittle Known FactsStory!Invisible Killer So many times we look at that time period in our history when brave men and women did very brave and courageous deeds to separate and save us from tyranny. And indeed it was just that. A time of bravery and sacrifice. And we often hear about the numbers of men who gave their lives in gaining freedom for the 13 original colonies. The numbers were staggering actually. We lost thousands, and so did the British and the French. War is a terrible thing, even if the purpose is for good, or right, or in this case....freedom. There is still the inevitable loss of life and that is never good thing. And sometimes, as in this case, it is not always from the most obvious of causes. Often we forget that so many things were different back then. Daily life itself was simply not lived the way it is now. Yes, people got up every morning and went to work, but that work was often just a few doors away, or even in their own house. Commuting was unheard of. Because travel was so difficult, vacations took months, not days or weeks and so people only took vacations once in a blue moon. You didn't cook dinner in 10 minutes from a box. Women started preparing the evening meal as soon as they were finished with serving lunch. No indoor plumbing, no water in the sink, no automobiles to take you to the store if you forgot something. You simply did without. Ok! So you know all those things. You know times were different, but what you may not realize is that some things were considered so much a part of everyday life that they almost went un-noticed. Things that would be devastating by today's standards. Like people dying during the Revolutionary War. Yes, thousands died. They died in famous places like Bunker Hill and many other places too. And you have heard of those stories, time and again. But it wasn't bullets that killed the most soldiers. It wasn't the war that tallied the most loss of lives from 1775 to 1779. No, not war. At least not the kind with bullets. But that was certainly what got all the headlines and write ups in the history books. The real killer...the one thing that took so many lives....well, that was just part of life.....at least back then. It's a Little Known Fact that one of the single biggest causes of death during that time in our history, right here in our own country was....an epidemic of Small Pox. Yes, we had one and it was rampant! Medical records of the time tell us it's true. But, that was really nothing new for those folks. After all, even our own George Washington caught it while visiting Barbados just a few years before while trying to save his brother Lawrence's life. But thank goodness for us, he was one of the lucky few who survived it! Do your family and friendslike fun facts and trivia? Today's Little Known Facts Story!
Home PageFun FactsLKF in the U.S.More LKF FunHere is Today'sLittle Known FactsStory!Never Got to Do His Job! Bill was having a rough time of it. Things were not going well at all. Not only was he out of the country at a fairly critical time, but he wasn't feeling well physically either. One thing is for sure, Bill attracted a great deal of attention wherever he went, and for two very good reasons. One was the way he dressed and acted. Bill favored outlandish styles in dress, including flowing scarves, long dressing gowns and powdered wigs. Oh, I might mention that this was about 150 years ago, so the powdered wig thing was kind of in at the time. And he was something of a dandy too, or so the records show. I mean even Andy Jackson, the archetypical macho man of the day, referred to Bill as "Miss Nancy". I guess that kind of says it huh! Bill was a real political insider. As a matter of fact, he was best friends with James Buchanan, who was one day to become president. Bill was even appointed ambassador to France. But now, Bill was in Cuba. I told you his health was bad and bad it was. He was suffering from both chronic alcoholism and tuberculosis. The combination was killing him....literally. So he came to Cuba for rest and treatment. But he knew that he had to be back to his job. He had new job. A very important job. And he had not spent one day on the job as yet. He knew that if he didn't get back to work and get established in his new job, things would be unbearable. And sure enough, that's what happened. He had even been required to sign an employment contract and swear an oath for this new job. And he had to do that in Cuba too. When it was clear that he was just not going to be able to return to work, even for his new job.....he boarded a ship and sailed to Alabama. There Bill did what he could, but in the coming months, there really wasn't much to do. His boss didn't want to bother the sick man with work, so he appointed others to do his duties for him. And it's a good thing I guess, because Bill didn't last even 6 more weeks after returning to his home in Alabama. One thing is for sure. It made history. Sure did! Why? Well, I told you that Bill had a new job, one that he was dying to get to. Sorry, that was too easy wasn't it? ;-) Problem was, Bill never got to spend even one day at his office, at his desk or in the town where he was employed. And you probably want to know why that made history. Well, because his full name was William Rufus de Vane King....and he was at the time....Vice President of the United States. AndIt's a Little Known Factthat Vice President King, was the only VP or President was not sworn-in on foreign soil, or even served one day as in Washington D.C. as Vice-President.
