There has been an outcry for new energy efficiency standards regarding tank style hot water heaters. The overall idea is a great idea but it does come with some drawbacks that homeowners should be aware of. Older homes with the older style hot water tanks are having issues replacing those older style tanks. The new style tanks are slightly bigger, due to more insulation surrounding the tank itself. We, as plumbers, are having a big problem fitting the new style tanks in the same closet where the old style tank was previously installed. This means that the homeowner faces a dilemma. Replace the old style tank with a smaller tank that will fit in the space provided, or to go to a tank-less style tank. These are both added costs to the homeowner. In actuality, the smaller tanks costs a little bit more than the bigger style tanks. Going tank-less seems to be the wave of the future these days. With a tank-less style hot water heater, you only heat the water as needed as compared to the older storage type tanks that heat constantly.
