To Learn or Not To Learn...

This afternoon I received an email from my brother that itemized characteristics of 'Living in 2009'.  I'm sad to report that most of the things listed were further evidence of convenience overload.  Doing things because they are more convenient, rather than doing things of merit and helpfulness.  Sometime added conveniences end up wasting our time.  What sense does that make?  In school settings, whether public, private, at home or work, is the goal still to learn?  You might think so.  You might be under the impression that school exists so that people can learn.  That's what we all hope, but how many students go through the motions of learning just to get someone off their back?  to pass a test, to get into another school, to get a job, to make money, to get everyone off their back so they can do what they really want to?  How many teachers lose patience because they become more interested in fulfilling standards rather than inspiring fascination.  I'm afraid all of us are guilty of that more often than not. A curiosity to truly learn and experience new things is becoming a rarity rather than a commonality among learners.  We all have obligations that we're not willing to forfeit, that's true.  But never grow convinced that we strive in life to get others off our back.  There is a subject, a place, a method that thrills you - keeps you captivated continually.  Find it. Live in it. Share it with others. ...read more
