Late winter is the time to get your yard ready for spring. Fruit trees can be pruned at this time of year. Remove no more that 10% of live wood. Remove all dead or damaged wood. Also remove branches that cross one another and are prone to grow into one another. Fruit trees can be sprayed with fungicide at this time of year and also sprayed for overwintering insects. Crepemyrtles can be pruned in late winter. Cut unwanted and dead canes at ground level. For best flowering, cut tree form crepemyrtles back one foot from the tips. For shrub type crepemyrtles, cut one foot from the ground. Crepemyrtles bloom on new wood. Pruning causes a flush of growth, thus new wood to set blooms. Outdoor fish, koi and goldfish will become active on warm, winter days. Resist the temptation to feed them until the water temperature reaches 45 degrees. Fish do no digest and metabolize correctly below this temperature. If your pond has been covered for the winter, it can be uncovered when all the loose leaves have been removed from the surrounding area. After uncovering make sure you clean your filter, eliminating the debris accumulated over the winter. If your pond was not covered for the winter, it is time to remove the leaves and organic debris that has accumulated over the winter.
