I had an installer come in and originally quote $1342. As he was completing the job, he realized he had the wrong pump, and in discussing with his manager about getting a new one, had to reschedule for two days later (in order to get the right pump). When he came two days later, he said he was able to give me a deal, but I was not allowed to tell anyone. He charged $742 (made payable to Rescue Rooter, using my credit card), and a separate $300 (payable to him in cash or local check only). He gave explicit instruction that though he was thrilled to give me a deal, I was to keep this deal between he and I. I felt intimated, as I needed my pump fixed, and at this point in the process, he was in the middle of the job. After looking up the new pump he provided, a simple Google search reflects the list price is under $500. I now realize that not only was I ripped off in that Rescue Rooter price of $742 is the only price I should have paid, but I was also an unfortunate victim of a shady installer scam. After a flooded basement, my water heater needed service. My particular unit gives a trouble code and I gave them the information regarding the code when I called along with the unit name, model, etc. The technician arrived inspected the unit and determined that it needed a sensor and stated that his boss would give me a call that evening and order the part. I had to cut them a check for the service call even though he basically did nothing. I assumed they'd be prepared since the trouble code is pretty specific as to what the problem was. I never got a call that evening. Then next day, I called first thing in the morning and the person who answered the phone said they had computer issues and someone would call me later. No call. I called the following day, the same gal took my number again and said she'd check with the parts department and call me back. No call. After some research, I determined the part was only $25. Realistically, what are they going to make off of my job? Not much. That explains why they never called me. As a business owner myself, I'm smart enough to realize that the small jobs have every potential to become large jobs at any point in time. Gene's is not that smart.
