Packing up and moving house is an exciting time for you and your family. With all of that excitement, though, can come a great deal of stress. Boxing up your entire home takes time, and packing your belongings away carefully to ensure they follow you safely to your new home isn’t always easy. Here they are: Be Prepared Once you know you’ll be moving – even if it’s before you’ve purchased your next home – start gathering packing supplies. If you don’t want to purchase all new moving boxes, visit local grocery stores and ask to take some boxes off of their hands. Nine times out of ten, they’ll be more than accommodating. Make sure you also stock up on packing tape (no less than 1.5’’ wide), labelling markers, and stuffing (packing peanuts, newspaper, etc.) for delicate and fragile items. Start Early Start packing as soon as you have a set moving date. To be even more efficient, you could begin packing once you have an estimate of the time frame you’ll be moving. Pack away things you don’t use often, like winter clothes if you’re moving in the summer or fall. If you haven’t used something in a few months and don’t see yourself using it before your move, go ahead and pack it. Make Donations When you begin packing, you’ll discover a lot of things you don’t use or need anymore. Instead of packing them and bringing them along to your new home, donate them to those in need. It can be difficult to know when to give something away. A good rule of thumb to follow is if you haven’t used it in a year and it doesn’t have sentimental value, don’t bring it along. Donate it to someone who will enjoy it as much as you used to. Be Organized Being organized during your packing process is essential when aiming for a stress-free move. As you pack, create a log of each box’s contents. A log will allow you to make sure everything is accounted for, and in the event that something is misplaced, you’ll know exactly what it is that you’re missing. Label every box clearly with the room it will go in and a brief description of what’s inside. For example, if you pack up your kitchen plates and bowls, label the box ‘Kitchen: Plates & Bowls’. Number each box as well, as it will allow your log system to function much easier. Following these moving tips will make your packing process a breeze. Just remember to take your time and do your packing properly the first time around. It will save you time when you unpack your belongings in your new home.
