A Writer's Guide To Cool Villain Names

Finding cool villain names may not seem like a difficult prospect. In fact, most people would probably assume that naming any character, whether villain or hero, would be the easiest and most insignificant part of the creative process. This is far from the truth, however. Finding just the right name can actually make or break a story and the process has tripped up many an author. When you think about it, it’s the name of your main character or characters that will sit with people the longest, so if that name carries the wrong message it can affect the overall feeling of your whole work. No matter how well written your story may be, people won’t pay much attention if they’re too busy laughing at the names of villains or heroes in it. Now that’s not to say that you have to stick to boring, bland names for your characters. There’s nothing wrong with giving them a little personality. Where would the Batman franchise be without The Joker, The Penguin or Catwoman? But you want to make sure you choose a name that evokes the right response in your readers. Naturally, when considering cool villain names you want to go with something that evokes evil or fear, so that readers are appropriately put off. But you don’t want to go so far over the top that your character loses credibility. Make him evil but don’t emasculate him. After all, your hero has to have something to do, doesn’t he? There are many places you can turn for inspiration when it comes to choosing names of villains. Mythology is a great starting point and has served many authors well. Names like Thor, Ajax and Medusa appear regularly in comic books and even in novels. Don’t stop with the classic Greek, however. Norse, Celtic and Inuit mythology are also pretty good sources as are Asian myths. While you want your villain to inspire dread, you also want to avoid the cliché. Damien, Lucifer and the like have been overdone. Try something a little more subtle. Look into the meaning of various words and see if you can’t come up with something that carries the proper weight without hitting readers over the head. Cool villain names can come from many sources so always be on the lookout for something that might work. Not everyone can come up with a Dr. Demento or Mr. Freeze, but if you do your research you’ll be able to find something that works within the context of your story and sends the proper message of cold hearted evil. Don’t toss off choosing a name as insignificant; it can have more impact than you realize. Take your time and put some thought into it. Your characters are like your children and they’ll have to spend the rest of their existence with the moniker you give them. Try to be a benevolent parent, even if you’re giving birth to a nasty character. Then you can sit back and enjoy as your evil little one leaves his mark on the world! ...read more

Given Name as Last Name.

The other day I was watching an episode of an old television show called  Route 66. It guest starred Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney and Boris Karloff, these three horror movie legends played themselves. They were in different parts of the world and wanted to meet somewhere to discuss whether or not they should try to come up with new monster characters. They decided to meet up in a hotel in Chicago and did not want to be recognized so Mr.Karloff decided to use their given names as their last names and spell it backwards. Then it hit me why didn't I think of that. Never the less Peter became Mr. Retep, Lon became Mr. Nol and Boris became Mr. Sirob. In the show one of the regular actors Martin Milner found out who they were and what they were up to. He told Peter why don't you try to scare the women that were there for a secretarial convention and if they could scare them then you probably would not need to change the monster characters. Peter thought that was a great idea and wondered why he had not thought of it himself. Lon donned his famous werewolf costume and proceeded to try and scare the women at the convention. He succeeded in scarring all but four. Three took a look at Peter's face without a mask and fainted. He told Lon "these three took one look at my face and fainted, I resent that". The last one was so in love and so sad because she had a fight with her boyfriend that nothing else really phased her.   Therefore if you are naming a character and want an unusual name for them try spelling your first name backwards. There is a caveat however, as this does not work with all names. Try it out and let me know how it worked for you. Fondly, Carla ...read more
