My sister and I were traveling up I-71 near Berea, OH and her old truck suddenly lost acceleration and stalled. Underneath the car was a puddle of oil from the now broken motor. She and I began calling Cleveland area scrap yards and Cash 4 Cars was extremely helpful. They paid her for the car and gave us a 15 minute ride to a friends home in that area. ...read more

Decline in price of many scrap metals hurting auto scrap market?

So far in 2013 most metals used in automotive recycling have exhibited a decline a value, which is a sharp contrast to the overall market pricing of metals, commodities and precious metals over the last few years. Even gold, which had been surging for several years now, has declined recently by approximately 10%. All markets have volatility and so it should be of no surprise. Auto scrappers are primarily focused on prices of: steel, brass, aluminum, platinum and copper.  Let’s take a look at some examples within the commodities market, specifically spanning the 1st quarter of 2013. The analysis below shows the metal and commodity pricing (rounded off) as of late November 2012 compared to that at the market close on Friday April 26, 2013. Although not specific to the auto scrap metal market, gold was included to illustrate the overall picture. Copper: 3.52/3.23 (-8%)Platinum: 1573/1476 (-6%)Silver:  33/24 (15%)Gold:  1723/1462 (-15%) Of the commodities listed above, the most surprising is Platinum, which had been a consistent gainer.  Platinum is a crucial component of a vehicle’s catalytic converter and as with Palladium, does an efficient job of oxidizing hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide that a car produces. Rhodium, another precious metal that hinges on supply and demand is also used in making catalytic converters and rose slightly is usage and market price in auto manufacturing in 2012. Only time will tell if the prices that automobile scrappers receive for car bodies and the parts containing valuable metals decreases significantly or not.  Two critical factors that could decide the future of the emission-related precious metals are:Whether more developing countries, with expanding percentages of vehicle ownership, institute tight emission control policies? When will the automobile industry itself develop a low-cost alternative to Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium that can effective achieve the environmental requirements needed for catalytic converters in the US and abroad?  I imagine that auto manufacturers would welcome independence from reliance on scarce and over-priced metals in vehicle production.   About the writer: Founder of Cleveland Scrap Cars in Cleveland, OH and can be reached athttp://www.clevelandscrapcars.comanytime. ...read more

What is required to scrap a car for cash in Cleveland

There are several things required for scrapping a car in Cleveland. First, you must have the car's Ohio vehicle title to prove ownership. A memorandum title is not acceptable, as this type of title indicates that a lender still owns the vehicle, rather than the seller themselves. Secondly, you must have an ID to verify you are indeed the vehicle owner. One other thing to consider, which will likely effect the price you are paid for your junk or scrap car, is whether the car is "towable" or not. A towable vehicle will have wheels on it, (of some kind) so that a standard tow truck or trailer can pickup and remove the vehicle. In some cases, the scrap car buyer will need to use a flatbed trailer to remove the vehicle. Flatbed trailer's are more costly to operate due to their fuel inefficiency and are more difficult for a driver to maneuver, which means that over the course of the shift the operator may incur a 10-15% decrease in overall efficiency. (towing less cars per shift) Obviously in the case where you have multiple vehicle to scrap at one time, a flatbed trailer is actually a preferred option, since it remove a couple vehicle in one trip. The Slow Death of the US Postal Service

The US Postal Service has been a corpse now since 2009. Another 2 billion lost this quarter for this "governmental business entity". Saturday mail delivery is ending in August. Businesses in the private sector do not announce reductions in their ONLY core competency (delivering mail) by 17% with a positive spin.Five-day mail delivery begins in August and may cut$2 billion a year from its losses, which were $15.9 billion last year.Mr. Obama: Your postal service is paying $5.5 billion a year for health benefits to future retirees, a mandate imposed onnoother government agency. Your new health policies will only deepen the losses of an entity that died four years ago.US Postal Service Chronology:2000: "Slow Death"2005: "Life Support"2009: "Death"2013: "Prolonged Death"Documented losses of $50 BILLION in the last three years will exceed $100 BILLION by 2016, due to transitioning retirees. On Friday, Patrick R. Donahoe, the postmaster general and all his staff left for a three day weekend in light of Monday's President Day Holiday. On Monday(President's Day) morning, my Yorkshire Terrier "Taffy" and I went for our usual early-AM walk and heard the rumbling of a truck rounding our cul-de-sac. The vehicle stopped abruptly at the neighbor's condo and a UPS driver dove from the vehicle to make a delivery and waved to us before he sprung back behind the wheel of his brown truck.Mr. Obama:Tuesday morningthe stock for UPS will open at $83 per share despite facing the same difficult issues as the "post-mortem" US Postal Service: ie... union negotiating and rising fuel and healthcare costs. Everyone is aware that your ability to enact many initiatives ended when your opposing party gained the majority in the House. Although terminating the US Postal Service is not an easy decision, most American's understand and ultimately respect a leader who will make tough "business decisions" that are needed for the survival of a company, organization or country.Tony Amodeo ...read more
