For the last five or six years now, Barbara and I close the Feeder Creek Lodge and we winterize the Lucky Dutchman II and we spend our winters in Florida. While we are in Florida we visit with our two daughters and our grandchildren, do a little fishing, and enjoy the warmth and sunshine. While I am in Florida, I keep a close eye on the weather back in Oswego County, not just to rub it in on my friends when they are knee deep in lake effect snow, but because the winter weather has a direct effect on our spring fishing. When we have winters with a lot of snow the following spring we have good fishing especially for brown trout. When the snow melts in the spring it carries nutrients into the lake and these nutrients attract bait fish and the bait fish attract predator fish such as trout and salmon. So far this winter there has been above average snow fall so we are on track for another great spring fishing season. Not only brown trout, but we should also see excellent spring salmon fishing for cohoes and kings. I am also excited about the size and number of the brown trout that we will be catching this year. Last year we were catching good numbers of two year brown trout and these fish were all ready big for their age. This spring those now three year old fish should be between seven to fifteen pounds.
