I am new to the US and had to file something called Non Resident taxes. I attempted to fill out the forms myself, but US tax law proved to be beyond my grasp. To make matters worse my mother speaks very little English. Fortunately we went to the H&R Block on 31st St. and met Iada Espeepan. I cannot say enough about the job that she did. First of all she spoke Spanish, so she was able to communicate with my mother directly. I signed up to meet with a rep as I wanted to know what I was going to get for my money. Boy am I a glad I did that instead of just signing up blindly. We decided to meet at my office after work. The first thing the rep did upon meeting me was take the edge of my cardigan sweater and open it. She informed me it was because she had the same sweater at home, but I am not stupid. She wanted to see what kind of figure I had. That's fine as appearance is important, but don't lie to me about it. The interview went downhill from there. She continuously spoke down to me for about a half hour (she actually drew me some pictures), as if she was trying to make me feel desperate. She told me (I am not making this up) that the reason the world is the way it is now, is because women are buying their own homes, travelling on their own and opening their own business instead of spending the time and money to get a man. I was shocked to say the least - why would I spend money on a matchmaking service that had values like that?? When I told her that it was a lot of money to spend without any guarantees, she asked me what I would rather spend that kind of money on. I told her that I had always wanted to go on an African safari. Her exact words that I have never forgotten: "you mean to tell me that you would rather go take a picture of a f-----g elephant and have no one to rest your head next to on the pillow at night?" Needless to say, at that point I said the meeting was over and walked her to the door. She said she had never been kicked out of an office before, which really made me question the desperation of her clientele. Not too long after that, I actually met Shoshanna (not even her real name by the way) at a jewish brunch. She proceeded to get incredibly drunk in public, hit on EVERY man she saw that didn't have a woman next to him, ask if they were jewish, blow off the ones that weren't, and try to sign the ones that were.
