Relationship between Social Justice and Leadership The relationship between leadership and social justice is similar to the relationship between a gardener and his plants. Gardeners must work diligently to create the best possible plants. Horticulturists go through a similar process as leaders. They must analyze soil, prepare soil, plant seeds, and maintain growth by watering seeds. Leaders must analyze the situation, come up with a plan, perform the plan, and maintain the prosperity of the resolution. Crops are similar to social justice in the sense that there are good plants and bad plants. Crops may not all receive equal amounts of water or fertilizer. It takes great leaders to fight for social justice. Similarly, it takes great gardeners to grow great plants. However, in both scenarios no matter how much experience and knowledge a leader or a gardener may have, they both do not possess the power to force change and growth and development for the better. Experiential-Based Reflection One experience that I have had the opportunity to engage in taking a leadership position and making an impact in social justice occurred last semester. People receive unequal treatment when it comes to food. This may be for several different reasons, however, it is morally wrong to waste food when millions of individuals around the world go hungry every day. With that, major corporations waste their entire inventory when all product goes one day past the due date. Individuals buy more food than they can finish. Hunger can lead to malnourishment and "one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016" (World Bank, 2016). Thus, I wanted to make an impact in this area. I analyzed the hunger issue on a smaller scale to determine a way I could make an impact. I worked with a team and created an event at my college called "Catsgiving". This was a campus wide event to raise money and awareness of hunger in our community and surrounding areas. We got food donated and made sure none of it went to waste. We concluded by raising over $300 dollars and 120 pounds of food to an organization that could distribute it to our community outside of campus. Leaders as Guardians of Public Values Applying the relationship between Leadership and social justice to the concept of leaders as guardians of public values. The combination of the words social and justice portray the "idea that all members of a society should have equal benefits and opportunities" (Pachamama Alliance, 2018). Leaders. Leadership is powerful and can influence the people around you. Being a leader has a lot of responsibility, and requires an individual to focus on the common good. This focus must not only be on the individual and organizational level, but also on the societal and institutional level. Public Values. Public values are values that are perceived by a majority of the population. Leaders must work to identify public values that are ethnically wrong, and attempt to create a movement. This movement should influence people to change their perspective and challenge the status quo. In terms of leaders as guardians; they must protect the moral and positive values that the public holds. Social Justice. Many public values must be positive to achieve social justice. We must all be treated the same no matter our race, gender, religion, or other various types of discrimination. On all levels, leaders must incorporate what is ethnically proper to the public. Advocators have been battling for social justice for hundreds of years. Through hard work and great leaders of public values we may achieve it. Why does it matter? Social justice matters because inequality limits many people every day. It discriminates upon individuals for things that they have no control over like, race and disability. Preventing these people from acquiring the same opportunities in life as others. Not only does unequal treatment and discrimination affect these individuals physically in society, but mentally and emotionally on a personal level. individuals who are discriminated upon live with the name calling, eye rolls, and mental abuse their entire life. As a society, we must acknowledge that this unequal treatment is wrong, and that they deserve the same opportunities as everyone else. Achieving social justice is not a small task and will require great leaders to challenge authority. These leaders must also be educators, and teach society that inequality is morally wrong. Society must accept and understand that there is nothing unjust about equal treatment. Everyone has the potential to be a leader towards achieving social justice. Addressing an issue an individual is passionate about, and then creating a plan to change it. Conclusion In conclusion, it is impossible to achieve social justice without great leaders.
