How NY State DMV Has Complicated New York Notary's and Public's Life
One of the main requirements of a notary is to check the identification of a person being notarized. We are expected to review a state-issued photo ID for this purpose. It seems that New York is the only state that thinks it's okay to abbreviate first names on drivers licenses--so, for example, instead of Catherine Anderson-Jones, we get C. Anderson-Jones. I have seen one too many drivers licenses where the NY DMV didn't have enough room in the character spacing for long last names. Didn't the New York State DMV consider that there would be legal situations where notaries and other legal officials would need to see the person's full name? I don't see this with other state licenses. They seem to have left plenty of room for all types of long names. It appears that NY State has increased the character width in the most recent drivers licenses but they don't appear to expand the names when they are re-issued with the larger spacing. They should notify people with these abbreviated first names and agree to redo them at no extra cost to the public. They also, amazingly, allow people to abbreviate their first name like a vanity, custom license plate. This is not the appropriate place for vanity. Now NY notaries have one more question to ask clients and one more request (to bring a passport) to make the process even more complicated and burdensome. It's pretty rare that someone will carry his or her passport to work, so, unless we discuss the notarization when they are at home, it leads to postponing notarizations that can be under strict deadlines. In addition, there are plenty of people, especially older Americans, who don't have passports at all. And getting a document notarized is supposed to be so easy. ...read more

NYC Making It Difficult for Mobile Notaries to Get Around Above Ground
It first started with the pedestrian walkways--the large areas that have now made it impossible for mobile notaries and thousands of New Yorkers to go from the westside to the eastside of Manhattan via Broadway on a bus. Now to get from the westside to the eastside, you have to go down the westside and then take a crosstown bus, one of the most painful time-consuming experiences around. It seems the balance of tourists' interests vs. residents' interests has gotten way out of whack. Then came the NYC budget cuts, which will reduce the number of buses, the frequency of buses and cancel bus routes all together. Entire bus lines in Manhattan are being cut. Want to get across 50th St. in Manhattan on a weekend. Forget it. The line was cancelled. The number of NY buses has also been cut, so it's not unusual to wait 30 to 40 minutes for a bus now. Well, just take a subway you say. Well, then we can't answer the phone when you call for a NYC mobile notary and you get that dreaded voicemail. It also is just a little on the hot side in the summer. So the next time you call a NYC mobile notary, please understand if we can't answer the phone right away. ...read more
