Teletemp Cooling Corp

By Latfitnyc

On July 7th 2009, I signed a proposal agreement with Teletemp cooling corp to install central air conditioning in my business, Triomph wellness and fitness located at 540 president street. The total cost for the entire job was $19,200 The contract stated that 50% of the cost, or $9600, was due upon signing of the agreement, with another 25% when the equipment was on the location of the job, and the final balance when the job was completed. On July 10th 2009, I paid the $9600 amount as stipulated. \n About a week later, I contacted Joe Lushe of Teletemp cooling corp to inform him that I was no longer interested in utilizing his company's service, hence I requested a refund. Though the contract I signed had no refund charge, at the time, I was willing to allow him to keep a tiny percentage of the amount paid as a fee for his troubles, as I was no longer interested in utilizing his service. Mr. Lushe refused to give a refund, even though he had no refund policy in the contract ...read more

The 10 Most Frequently Encountered Spring A/C Problems

In a tough economy the last thing you need is a surprise air conditioning repair. While all mechanical systems require repairs from time to time, many are preventable. In no particular order, here are the ten most common problems we encounter every Spring and what you can do to avoid them. 1. Tripped Breaker One of the most common causes of no-cool calls is a tripped breaker. Reset it before calling us. Hopefully, it won’t repeat. If it does, call us. Something is causing the breaker to trip. Often, it’s something simple, like a bad breaker, loose wire, or a bad capacitor. However, if not addressed, some simple problems could lead to far more expensive repairs. 2. Dirty Filter If you have a 1” disposable filter, it should be replaced monthly. It’s out of sight and out of mind, so it’s easy to forget to change it. Yet, every year we go on service calls where the air conditioner isn’t cooling and the cause is restricted air flow from an extremely dirty filter. Dirty filters reduce indoor air quality, make the home less comfortable, and can result in frozen indoor coils, eventually leading to serious repairs. 3. Refrigerant Leaks An air conditioning system is a sealed system. It should never leak refrigerant. When it does, bad things happen. Your air conditioner efficiency falls and electricity use rises. Your air conditioner may not cool. The coil may freeze. The compressor could become damaged. Plus, refrigerants are greenhouse gases. We use a variety of tools to track down refrigerant leaks. Often the problem is as simple as a bad Schrader valve or a weakened connection between a fitting and refrigerant tubing.   4. Switch Turned Off Some heating and air conditioning systems have a wall switch at the indoor unit for safety and convenience that can be confused with a light switch. If this is accidentally switched off or left off during mild weather, your air conditioner will not start. Always check the condition of this switch before calling us.   5. Thermostat Problems Some thermostats must be switched between heating mode and cooling mode. If the switch is in the wrong position or breaks, your air conditioner won’t start. Quality digital thermostats rarely fail. Some of the cheap ones available from the big boxes might. So what goes wrong? The switch might break, a voltage spike might cause a malfunction, and so on.   6. Clogged Drain Line Air conditioners pull moisture out of humid air while lowering the temperature. The moisture is typically drained out of your home through your plumbing system. A drain pan should be present as a back up with a secondary condensate drain. Algae can grow in these lines, clogging them up. This can lead to water damage in your home. We clear the drain lines as part of our Spring air conditioning tune-up or you can have it done separately, as needed.   7. Contactor A contactor is an electromechanical switch in your air conditioner. Sometimes the silver coating on a contactor will wear off and the contactor will stick, causing the outside unit to run continuously, which is expensive. Sometimes ants are attracted to the electricity and get squashed between the contactors, blocking them from closing. When this happens, the outside unit won’t run. Contactors can also fail electrically. We check these as part of a Spring tune-up, clean the surface of the contactors if needed, and recommend replacement if failure appears imminent.   8. Dirty Evaporator Coil The evaporator coil is located inside your home. Liquid refrigerant is sprayed into this coil to evaporate and draw heat from the air being blown across the coil. Periodically the coil needs to be cleaned or dust and particle build up will restrict the coil’s heat transfer capabilities and reduce system air flow down the duct system. Dirty coils increase operating cost while simultaneously reducing home comfort.   9. Dirty Condenser Coil The condenser coil is located outside your home. The compressor pulls hot refrigerant gas from the evaporator and pumps it through the outdoor coil where it condenses into a liquid as the condensing unit fan pulls air across the coil. A dirty or restricted coil is inefficient, increasing electricity usage and reducing system cooling capacity. We wash, clean, and if needed, comb the condenser coil as part of the Spring tune-up.   10. Duct Leaks Your heating and air conditioning system adds and removes heat to the duct system. The duct system is tasked with delivering it to the occupied areas of your home. If the ducts that supply conditioned air to the living space leak and are located outside of the living space, you’re essentially paying to heat or cool the outdoors. If the ducts that return conditioned air from the living space leak, you pull in unconditioned, unfiltered air. Duct leakage is one of the leading causes of inefficient air conditioning operation and home comfort problems. Leaks range from duct penetration to split seams to completely disconnected ducts. Repairing individual leaks is not expensive. It’s the leaks that are expensive. ...read more

Save Money with Solar Powered Outdoor Lighting

Some people like to sit outside in the evening, on their porch, deck or in their yard, enjoying the night air while gazing at the stars. Others like to people watch (you know those nosy neighbors I'm talking about). It doesn't matter why you're out there, solar powered outdoor lighting is a great way to brighten your outdoor space at night for a few hours. If you're at all interested in saving energy (and money), then installing solar-powered outdoor lighting makes absolutely perfect sense. Outdoor solar lights are easy to install and virtually maintenance free. The best of all - they provide free electricity! These particular lighting systems use solar cells, which change sunlight into electricity. The electricity is stored in batteries for use at night.Outdoor solar lighting systems will work in most areas of the United States. Take note that it is important to think about geographic and site specific variables when selecting a product. A solar lighting system will work well only as long as the solar cells obtain the manufacturer's recommended hours of sunlight. Some solar lighting systems are self-contained units. You only need to place the lights in a sunny location. Others have the lights separate from a solar cell panel. Only the panel needs to be placed in a sunny location. Before you buy an outdoor solar lighting system, check with the manufacturer to see if replacement bulbs or batteries are available as some units don't provide replacement options.Solar-powered lamps do not offer an excessively large amount of light, but do the job when it comes to lighting smaller areas. There are many different ways that outdoor solar lights can be used. They can help accent your home, illuminate your garden, brighten your driveway, pathways, walkways, porches, decks and steps. They decrease the chance of your home being burglarized and help discourage pesky nocturnal pests.  Using Outdoor solar lighting is one the best ways you can save energy around your home. Some benefits of solar outdoor lighting are:They are inexpensive to buy. They are quick and easy to install. They save you money (they cost nothing to run). You can use solar garden lighting where standard lighting would be too expensive or difficult to use.You can get up to 1000 nights of lighting with a single rechargeable, replaceable battery.Outdoor solar lighting has led lights that are energy efficient, give off little heat, and emit no greenhouse pollution. ...read more

Be Prepared For Those Severe Summer Storms

For some of us, there is nothing more fearsome than that helpless feeling you get when a severe storm starts heading your way. We hope and pray that it will pass without severe damage or harm.If you haven't taken the appropriate safety measures, the impact of such a storm can be devastating. It's not just an issue of protecting your property and belongings; severe weather can be life-threatening, and should always be taken seriously.During the summer months, the biggest danger is generally from thunderstorms. A severe storm can produce a tornado, or the destruction caused by extreme winds, heavy rains, hail, and lightning can be catastrophic.Knowing what to do when severe storms and/or weather arrive is crucial. The tips you'll find here will help towards protecting your home, your family and your belongings. There is only one catch - you have to act on them!LightningSince my main focus is on thunderstorms, I will start with the most apparent danger – lightning. You may think that you are protected while your home. No so true – lightning can in fact still cause some big problems.During a lightning storm, there are two specific things you should never use. The first is a wired telephone. It's okay to use a cell phone, but any phone that plugs into a wall could conduct electricity from a lightning strike right into your body. And check this out - the second thing you should never do is take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm. Why, because lightning can be carried through the pipes in your home. Who knew!Lightning can also result in all kinds of trouble for your appliances and other electronic devices. It may sound like a lot of work, but one way to protect your appliances (refrigerator, washer, microwave, computer, television, etc.) is to just simply unplug them. See – now that's not too hard is it.An even better idea is to add a secondary layer of protection by using a "whole-house" surge suppressor. These can be installed by a licensed electrician. Together with individual protectors, there is no better way to thwart damage from potential electrical spikes.FloodingA further problem brought on by rain storms is flooding. Flooding can damage belongings both inside and outside the home.An early warning system can help control the damage from flooding. There are products you can buy. They won't necessarily stop the flooding, but will let you know about it before it does any major damage. There is also equipment you can install that will cut off the water supply into your home if it detects a problem caused by a leak in the home. You might also want to consider possibly investing in, or maintaining your sewer backflow valve. Without it, you could have unsanitary water being pushed back into your home. Yuck!If your home has a sump pump, make sure that it's properly maintained so that it will work properly when required. A licensed plumber can ensure it's in peak operating condition. After The StormOnce the storm has passed, there are still some issues (safety&comfort) to take into account. With any luck, you haven't lost power to your home. If you have, it may be too late to buy a portable generator. If you live in an area with lots of storms, a portable generator can make all the difference. While waiting for the electricity to come back on, be sure to keep your appliances unplugged so the sudden surge won't damage them. Also check to be sure that any rising water, wind or lightning hasn't impaired or damaged any of your utility services, and check for fire in and around your home.Don't forget to check yourcentral air conditioning systemto make certain it's in good working order. It can be damaged by flying debris. Worst case scenario – it may have been zapped by lightning. Many systems contain fragile electronics both inside and outside the home. If you notice any damage, or think the system has been zapped by lightning, it's probably best to have a licensed technician check it out before turning it back on. ...read more
