Is price the only determining factor when shopping for a service?

I spent the last week looking to add a new point of sale system to our local business.  I first created a list of the potential products that were appropriate for the task.  Then I interviewed the vendors (mainly online, via email and and on the phone) to determine which products would best fit our needs now and in the future. I thought about the benefits of each and obvioulsy the cost associated with it.  One thing I want to point out is the fact that I am switching from an Internet based software to a locally hosted software (on a DVD).  The interesting part is that the new software will cost more in year one, but my long term costs will be lowered as I only pay once versus the ongoing "internet access license fee".  The short term higher out of pocket will be made back in 3 years and then after I am likely to save a few hundred dollars annually. All the software allows online access from the vendor for updating, account management, reservations and online payments.  This is the best of both worlds and something I am glad I stumbled upon during my research.  One of my goals was to save money, but the truth is, that became second important as I determined which software program would benefit the business now and in the long term.  Which vendor was most interested in solving my needs.  Which vendor wanted to make me a long term partner.  When all was said and done, I think I learned a lot about software, the industry, my business, but the fact that price is not the determining factor. I am sharing this with the readers, but also with my staff at the storage facility as I want to remind everyone that the amount of service, the dedication to solving problems and the creation of a relationship that is more about the long term than a short term ring of the register is the best way for everyone to do business.  Let me know what you think, and if you are interested in Self Storage, let me know if my staff at Safe Haven Self Storage is building a relationship as that is the goal. ...read more

Getting your home organized...for life

Getting Organized in your home for a better life When you drive into your garage after a long day out of your home, the last thing you want is to get upset because of an over crowded garage. This small little annoyance might be the spark that starts a bad mood. Don't let it. Coming home to your peaceful abode should be the start of the relaxing part of your day. What can you do?  Organize your life.  Start with your garage and then slowly move through your home.   Ask yourself, am I going to use this in the next 6 months or not.  If not, that item is a perfect candidate for storage.  Store items that are not going to be used this season;  Skis, snowboards, snow mobiles, shovels, ladders, pool equipment, patio furniture, bikes and skateboards, boxes of off season clothing&shoes…all can be rotated for their time of use.  Consider a local established Self Storage facility.  Now that you are past the garage, and walking in to the house, are you still noticing piles of old mail, notes to follow up on, shoes, toys and over stuffed drawers? Take a deep breathe and relax. What can you do? Pack it up and bring it to Self Storage. Mark your boxes, organize your thoughts, but get it out of sight so you can enjoy your home. Here are a few simple tips to help you get organized: Ø     Be patient. It took years to over crowd the house….don't expect to pack it and move it all in one day. Self Storage is open 7 days a week just for this reason. Take a few boxes a week for a month and relax, the clutter will soon be gone. Ø     Make a list of what is in the box, and where you are storing the box. Ø     A list helps you find that baseball glove in April when your child tries to turn the house upside down…screaming for help from mommy. Ø     Some stuff is not worth saving. You really should discard items you don't use anymore. Drop it off at an eBay reseller and make a few dollars. Or donate to a charity. Ø     Be gracious and donate old books to local day care. Ø     Clothing you wont wear to a consignment shop. What you want to do is organize your stuff so that you can find it, use it, enjoy it…without the frustration of seeing it every day. ...read more

Self Storage changes your home & your lifestyle - for the better

Self Storage is more than a clean up of your home.  It is truly an opportunity to get your life organized and stop procrastinating.  The process of determining what you need to keep in your life is a introspective look into your life and thus it is a helpful annual process. Many customers of Safe Haven Self Storage are using our brand new storage facility to rotate their seasonal goods.  This allows them to focus on the hear and now.  They store their outdoor summer equipment during the winter and rotate their winter stuff during the summer.   With pools season now upon us, we have seen many individuals returning their BBQ, patio seating and pool equipment and summer toys to their home and bringing back their snow blowers, shovels, skis, skates and winter snow tires for off-season storage.  It is a quick and easy hour with a huge payoff in personal convenience. Having easy access to your skis (winter) or bikes (summer) allows you to be more active in your life and do the things you want to do more frequently. The benefit of storage is ease and convenience of accessing your goods and getting going.  You, your spouse and kids will thank you.   ...read more
