Far Rockaway is located on the Rockaway Peninsula and is a neighborhood in Queens, New York. It was named for the Indians who once inhabited Long Island and before the Civil War, Rockaway was frequented by well-known vacationers such as Washington Irving and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Major attractions nearby include Gateway National Recreation Area - Breezy Point and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. One of the best places to visit when you are in Far Rockaway is Rock Hall Museum, a pre-Revolutionary War home with displays of artifacts from the 1700s and 1800s found during excavations of the home.
