Making the 9/11 “WE REMEMBER” Flag for NY State

East Greenbush, NY, September 22, 2011.  Gettysburg Flag Works (GFW), located in East Greenbush, NY was chosen by the Office of the Governor to produce the10th Anniversary 9/11 “WE REMEMBER” Commemorative Flag.  The flag, designed by New York State, was unveiled at a press conference at the State Museum by Governor Cuomo and the National September 11 Memorial&Museum.; The symbols on the flag evoke what was lost on September 11th and what still endures. The 40 stars represent the victims who lost their lives on United Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The five-sided figure represents the Pentagon, where 125 people perished. At the center of the flag are the Twin Towers, where the greatest loss of life occurred that day.  When GFW received the call from Governor Cuomo’s Office informing them that their company was chosen, all owner Mike Cronin could do was smile and reflect back when it all started. A materials engineer for 24 years, Cronin started selling flags out of the trunk of his car as a part time venture in 1993. In 1996 he was laid-off from his engineering job and faced the biggest decision of his professional life. “Once I made the decision, I never looked back. It was the best thing that ever happened to my career.”  Cheryl Rings, the first employee hired by GFW, received the call in late August from the Office of General Services requesting a quote for a very confidential project. “In my 12 years selling and making flags, I’ve never before had a confidential project come across my desk. It was exciting, but my first look at the artwork was the moment I knew what it was for and I was honored to be part of something so special. I remember the faces and heartbreaking stories from our customers those couple of days following the attacks in 2001 and this felt like closure”. Once the Governor’s Office gave the green light, the production team swung into action.  Everycustom flagfrom the original order was  sewn individually by the women at the East Greenbush store. A dedicated team worked 8-10 hour days to ensure the flags were ready on time for the unveiling.   Gettysburg Flag Works has grown from a company of two employees selling American Flags to 12 employees offering a wide range of products includingUS Made American Flags/Flagpoles, Custom Flags/Banners and Promotional Items. While so many businesses are struggling through this recession, Cronin has managed to increase sales and hire additional employees. His company’s success reminds us all that the small businesses remain the backbone of our country. So when you see the new9/11 Memorial Flagflying, look upon it with an appreciation that the first flags were Made in America, right here in East Greenbush, NY.     For more information about GFW, visitwww.gettysburgflag.com. ...read more

Stars For Our Troops - Send us your old American Flags!

The Stars for our troops program takes your worn, used American Flags and turns them into a prized possession for an American Soldeir at home, on base or overseas. Volunteers lovingly cut each star from the flag, dispose of the stripes properly, and place each star into a tiny plastic bag with a card. The card reads:"I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten" Each star is then handed to, mailed or sent with a care package to an American Soldier or Veteran by volunteers, family, friends and through Gettysburg Flag Works retail location. Your worn out American Flag can touch the lives of 50 American Soldiers even after it's reached the end of it's flying days! How can you help? 1. Send us your old American Flags. We will see that they are cleaned and each star makes it's way to an American Soldier. To save on shipping, collect your neighbors flags too, and send them all at once. Attn: Stars for our Troops Gettysburg Flag Works 715 Columbia Turnpike East Greenbush, NY 12061 2. Link to this page and tell your friends. There is an ongoing need for these stars as we have troops leaving for combat all the time, and returning home where they need to integrate back into society. Places that mike get the most exposure are facebook, twitter, blogs or personal websites. Emails are great too! ...read more

What is Patriotism?

Patriotism is the devotion to one's country. It's pride in heritage, shared beleifs, a common goal. It's a shared past and often a shared future. Is is shown in many ways but flying your country's flag is the most recognizable visual display of patriotism. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 the American scene changed. Patriotism was at an all-time hight throughout the United States. Today, the visual display is not as great, but the enthusiasm is still strong. With the start of the Tea Party movement, it seems that a new version of that patriotism has risen. This group recalls the early history of the United States with it's give me liberty or give me death attitude and use of the Gadsden rattlesnake flag at rally's and demonstrations. The sentiment and faces may change, but one thing is for sure, The American people are a proud, patriotic, American Flag waving bunch, and that's not likely to change.   ...read more
