Discerning the Ethical Grounds of In Vitro Fertilization

August 10, 2011— An article was published on New York Times about fertility procedure that caused quite a stir in the public. The article, as was written, was about a 45-year-old woman, already a mother of several children, decided to undergo a fertility treatment after six years of attempting to conceive another child. The procedure was a success that, of course, made the couple thrilled until they were held back with the news that two embryos were fertilized inside her. In the statistics of the in vitro fertilization procedure, two fertilized embryos mean twins.     Terrified by the notion of raising twins at such an age terrified the couple to the point where they decidedly asked their doctor to terminate the other embryo. Left with a single embryo inside, the couple was forced to see the scenario as having a single child than losing one.     For years since its successful start in 1978, IVF procedure has been a target of countless revile from different sectors of the public. It was unethical and immoral, they kept on saying. Another was: IVF is another of science’s effort to alter and change man’s nature against the way they were designed.     The only sad thing about these scornful statements is how people often forget to sympathize with other people. We are currently living in modern times where countless studies and experiments have led us in the first place. IVF, among the fertility procedure available, was not created to test nor defy nature but rather to help unfortunate couples achieve a family. Because at the very beginning of this argument, we, human, will always want to extend our hands and help. ...read more

The surrogate mother can eitherdonate the eggsor carry another woman’s eggs. There are many factors that can improve surrogacy and IVF success rates and these include the age and general health of the couple and skills of the fertility doctor.  For women who are interested to act as a surrogate, they need to pass the necessary examination set by the clinic.
