VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLOMBIA – ℗ PRESTON RENTALS is proud to be a big part of the University of British Columbia’s student housing project, Brock Commons. The ℗Preston Rentals Superdeck® Retractable Loading Platform System was used as a key tool in the building process of this innovative project that finished four month ahead of schedule. The Brock Common project involved a lot of unknown variables for Urban One Builders in constructing the world’s tallest Mass Timber building. “When a construction team is presented with a project that involves “firsts” it can be very challenging to predict what will be needed to meet the execution requirements …” said Bill Leininger - Superintendent, Urban One Builders Construction Management Inc. The tall wood student residence at the University of British Columbia used advanced wood-based building systems and engineering. The wood structure stands 18 stories high and provides 404 student residence beds, 305 suites and integrated kitchen facilities. Urban One Builders looked for an efficient solution that would offer simplicity and time saving while transporting and installing sheetrock plasterboard, in addition to taking waste out and loading mechanical piping, framing materials, and insulation. The idea of using loading platforms became the obvious answer. Urban One’s concern was that a single platform would have to be moved constantly or multiple platforms would require multiple locations where the envelope panels would have to be left out - which would have greatly affected finishing the suites. Urban One coordinated with ℗ Preston Rentals on the best strategy to use the SUPERDECK® Loading Platforms, which offered a complete system of shoring and retractable decks that utilizes the efficiency of stacking multiple decks in a common location, while still maintaining the use and access to every deck at any time. Urban One originally ordered three Superdecks® just before the wooden structural phase began, and quickly increased that to six decks when they saw that the predicted install of two floors per week was achievable with the ℗ Preston Rentals Superdeck® Retractable Loading Platform System. “By the end of the Wooden Structural phase of the project the construction team was able to install 16 floors in 9 weeks. A very satisfying result from planning and execution. The ℗ Preston Rental SUPERDECK® was the perfect choice of equipment and played an integral part of the success of the Brock Commons Tall Wood project,” said Leininger. Overall the wooden structure projects was completed less than 70 days after prefabricated components arrived on site, making the world’s tallest wooden building approximately four months faster in completion than a typical project of a similar size.
