Hi. I'm Randy Chalfin, owner of the Shoe Box and the only "Shoeman" in Henderson. My store specializes in professional shoe fitting for children - first walkers (approximately 1 year old) up to about 12 years old. I also have soft soled shoes for the little ones who are not yet walking. Let's start with some basics: Shoes will not make a child who is not walking or who is almost walking WALK. I know that is contrary to what many of you might think, but children learn to walk barefoot. Ask your pediatrician if you don't believe me. If your child is not walking, the only kind of "shoe" that should be on his or her foot is a SOFT-SOLED shoe (Pediped, Robeez). As long as you can mush it in your hand, it's OK to put on their feet. Once they start walking (at least 12 steps without holding onto anything) they are ready for shoes. Today, there are many options for first walkers, but NO STIFF SHOES NO MATTER WHAT! A hard-soled shoe DOES NOT mean it is a stiff shoe. I don't sell any stiff shoes for kids. Anyone who does is not doing your child any favors. Also, there's nothing magical about getting a shoe 1/2 size bigger. People ask me what size will he wear? I tell them the size that fits best. Of course there should be room to grow, but that does not necessarily mean buying 1/2 size bigger. Also, just because you're buying the "right size" doesn't mean that the shoe is a "good fit." Lastly, as much as kids like the "light up" and "character" shoes, these types of shoes are typically too stiff and do not fit properly. Your child might as well go barefoot than wear a shoe that is 2 sizes too big or one that does not fit properly. I hope this information is helpful and disspells many of the shoe "myths" out there.
