Kale and the positive people at Southwest Orthopaedic Physical Therapy ( SWOPT ) are extremely knowledgeable, fun people. I had double knee replacement surgery and I went to ( SWOPT ) for pre-surgery strengthening and conditioning and they had a big part in making my surgery a success, I would recommend them any day to my riends and family members, there is no better PT in the Southwest. ...read more

I can't say enough about Speciality Hospital of Albuquerque! In the two months my wife was there they accomplished all their medical goals in a very short time. We were in rehab much quicker than we expected. The staff, from the Doctors to the support staff, always showed a sincere concern for Diane's well-being and made every effort to make sure she was comfortable and well cared for. Our sincere thanks to Terry LaMantia and his great staff at Speciality Hospital! ...read more

Inspiration

I just returned from a conference that inspired me to tell my story.  People think it is a unique thing to want to work with seniors.  It is something I have wanted to do all my life.  As a child, I was close to my grandmothers--one in particular.  I only got to see them a few times a year so I relished that time. As they aged, I saw the need to provide more support and oversite on my visits.  Even as a child, I knew that my grandmother's diabetes was something she needed to manage.  Each visit I checked her medications--prescribed and over the counter.  I threw out anything that had expired and explained why.  She and her neighbors also had the habit of diagnosing themselves and sharing medications.  I would gather medications that came from friends and return them with firm instructions that they should not share.  Grandma's pantry was also filled with things she should not be eating.  Together we would look things over and talk about what the sugary snacks were doing to her blood sugar.  We'd fill the trashcan and shop for healthier foods. She had a beautiful vegetable garden so we harvested and cooked up great soups and casseroles. As the health of both grandmother's declined--one had Alzheimer's the other had heart disease and diabetes--I would hear about how they were "treated" by their physicians.  I wished that we knew then what we know now about not just treating but truly following patients.  There are things that are a normal part of aging.  Both these strong and amazing women had ailments that had courses of treatment that could have added to their quality of life. These women, whom I admired and still do, were and are my inspiration to be an advocate for seniors.  I studied aging and became a gerontologist.  I love what I do!  The opportunity to make a difference in someone's life on a daily basis is truly a gift.  I don't take it for granted.  Each client is their own unique person with amazing life experiences and wonderful stories!  I am blessed to be able to share even a moment of time with them.  I hope to inspire others to enter the field of senior care.  It is a need that will only be increasing over the next 20 years.  There needs to be knowledgeable people in the industry to help manage the care that will be required by the growing senior population.  If you are looking to change, or start, a career path consider working in the senior care industry.  I have to say, even the hard days are rewarding! ...read more
