Save your 8mm and 16mm films for HD!

Believe it or not, even 8mm film has higher resolution than standard definition video! So if you've had your films transferred to DVD, it is advisable to hold onto the 8mm or 16mm originals for a later HD re-transfer for Blu-ray and other formats. Besides, film has proven longevity if stored properly (cool and dry). I have 8mm Kodachrome home movies from my family dating back to 1953. The quality and color are still perfect! DVD's and Blu-Ray disks are layered. Should adverse conditions cause those layers to separate, they become totally unusable. If a film breaks, you lose only the damaged section. If film gets wet, sections or all of it may be salvageble. But water damage to a disk can be a total loss. If you value those memories, always preserve the originals along with the transfers to new formats. Also, have more than one disk copy made and store at least one of them away (never to be played) strictly as a master for backup. ...read more
