Top Old Western Movies

There is nothing quite like a gun-slinging, horseback-riding, old time country living western movie to capture your imagination.  With so many classic titles to choose from, finding the best western movies to enjoy can be a daunting task.  While you really can't go wrong with any old western, there are a few must-see movies that every movie buff needs to watch.


  • "Tombstone"(1993) with Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, and Sam Elliot tops out the list as the best Western movie.  This is the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the OK Corral like you've never seen before. 

  • "3:10 to Yuma"(1957,2007), both the original and updated version follow the same storyline: an outlaw awaits the next train out of town for his trial while a local rancher keeps him hidden.

  • "True Grit"(1969), starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell, and Kim Darby paints a story of a stubborn U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger track down the killer of a young woman's father.

  • The Spaghetti Western Trilogy, including "Fist Full of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly", all starring Clint Eastwood, follow

  • "Hondo"(1953), starring John Wayne is a movie about an Army member that finds a woman and child living in uninhabitable conditions and takes it upon himself to protect them.

  • "Unforgiven"(1992), starring Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Gene Hackman is a more recent classic that follows the hero out of retirement on one last mission and a search for justice.

  • "Conagher"(1991), starring Sam Elliot and Katharine Ross follows a widow trying to survive in the wild west, and the cowboy that can't get her off his mind.

  • "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly"(1966) featuring Clint Eastwood follows treasure hunters in a race against the law.

  • "Lonesome Dove"(1989), although not a movie but rather a television miniseries, follows two former Texas Rangers as they move a herd of cattle west toward a better life, and lose men in the process.

  • "Dances With Wolves"(1990), although more recent, makes the list for the top Western movies of all time.  Kevin Costner as Dunbar has to make a decision between his Army roots and the tribal life he has grown accustomed to.
