Hillsborough blaze probed

HILLSBOROUGH —The cause of a fire that gutted a vacant building at the 369-acre General Services Administration's Belle Mead Depot on Tuesday still is under investigation, police said.Smoke from the fire, which was reported shortly before 5 p.m. and was brought under control by 6 p.m., could be seen from miles away on Route 206.No injuries were reported.Firefighters remained on the scene off Mountain View Road Tuesday evening, wetting down the smoldering 100-foot by 50-foot warehouse building. The Somerset County Office of Emergency Management was called to the scene to test the air quality because there may have been asbestos in the building, said Police Chief Paul Kaminsky. All Hillsborough fire companies responded to the fire, in addition to firefighters from neighboring municipalities. The Hillsborough Rescue Squad also responded.Last week, the Township Committee approved spending $15.73 million to take ownership of the federally owned property and rehabilitate the environmentally contaminated sections. The cost will be equally divided between the township and Somerset County.Fearing the site could be sold to a developer, the Township Committee had voted in 2006 to join Somerset County in taking over the property, which was used as an Army warehouse facility through the Vietnam War.The township hopes to transform the property into parkland, recreation and a research and development facility."This fire is even more reason we need to get this thing moving and taken care of,'' Mayor Anthony Ferrera said Tuesday. "It's so critical we move forward on this project so township emergency services know what's going on behind these fences.''Ferrera said several portions of the fences around the property have been vandalized."There are numerous breaches of security around the property,'' Ferrera said. "There's definitely access into this property.'' ...read more
