Cable Puller and ATV Winch: The Basics

A few months ago we had been fighting with a large Balsam Fir which had been partially blown up and ended up hanging on to another tree, and it was on a steep slope within less than 10 feet of our garage, we bought a 2 ton cable puller and ended up destroying the puller, we had to get another4 ton cable puller, and this time it did  the job without breaking anything .Actually cable pullers are heavy duty pulling tools and can be used to do a lot of things, sometimes you even can use it in pace of ATV Winch to save money. The rated capacity of cable puller usually comes in from 1 ton to 4 ton(2200lbs to 8800lbs), the reach of the pullers is usually 6 feet to 12 feet, the higher the capacity, the shorter the reach, 1 ton puller can have 12' reach while 4 ton puller will only have 6' reach, but some extra heavy duty 4 ton ones can have 11' or more. People sometimes call these cable pullers "Come Along", but come along refers to a lot of different hand tools besides cable pullers, such as chain hoists, chain pullers, hand winch, strap pullers, and more, in a word, a come along is a hand operated ratchet lever winch. Typically hand winch is used to pull boat out of water on the boat trailer or lower the boat into water, that's why you see 'boat trailer winch", and hand winch has to be fixed onto something before use while you can just hook cable puller onto something heavy, non movable , such as a tree. Before you buy a cable puller or similar product, you should know it's features and applications. The cable limiter on a cable puller help to keep 2 wraps of cable on ratchet wheel, and you can release loads one notch at a time, this way you can release a vehicle or a boat safely, it usually has a laminated steel ratchet wheel, rust resistant plated steel, drop forged steel safety hooks, 4 ton model will feature 5/16'' galvanized aircraft cable, and all the cable pullers will have to meet OSHA and ASME specs. Typically the cable pullers will have two slip safety hooks with latch, but some super heavy duty ones have 3 safety hooks for enhanced protection. The cable pullers are ideal for stretching, pulling, lifting and lowering. To pull vehicles onto the trailer or release the vehicle off the trailer, hold or drag trees when you're logging, pull big rack or shed around your house, pull the tree stumps out of somewhere , compare to electric powered winch, such asATV winch, cable pullers are inexpensive alternatives. ...read more

Truck Transport Chains and Load Binders

Grade 70 transport chainsandratchet bindersare tough truck tie downs, both chains and binders are made of carbon steel, their working load limits are higher than their straps counterparts , say we compare grade 70 size 5/16'' binder chain(which has 4700lbs WLL) to WLL 3333lbs 2'' ratchet tie down straps ,  3/8" chain(WLL 6600lbs) to 4" tie downs(5400lbs) , the grade 70 chains are stronger than ratchet tie down straps and the grade 70 load binders are stronger than grade 70 chains, 3/8''-1/2'' chain binder has WLL of 9200lbs, which is much stronger than 6600lbs of 3/8'' chains . Another reason chains and binders are considered heavy duty, is their design factor is 4:1 while webbing tie downs have 3:1 typical design factor, see "Design Factor" for reference .The National Association of Chain Manufacturer recommends that the steel which can be used to make grade 70 binder chains must have less than 0.35% Carbon, 0.040% Phosphorous and 0.050% Sulfur. As long as the choice made by chain manufacturers meets the recommended criteria and the final products meet or exceeds DOT requirements(or CHP, California Highway Patrol, or some other mandated requirements), we can use these products for transportation purpose and don't have to worry about inspections. We use these heavy duty chains and binders to haul heavy equipment, for instance, backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, these big rigs are tough or straps, we have to use steel chains to tie them down , the most popular chain size for these  kind of load are 3/8", for some light equipment which is still too heavy and hard for straps 5/16" will be ideal chain size. 1/2" and up are mostly for really heavy stuff, for example, military applications, say to tie down battle tanks, you will definitely need 1/2" even 5/8" grade 70 chains to tie those bad boys down.Grade 70 transport chains can be used on anything but overhead lifting, you need at least grade 80 alloy chains for overhead lifting. We see people use transport chains to drag the trees, tow the docks, and to tie down the logs out of the the trees, you can go around to find more creative uses of thesechains and binders. ...read more
