Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County

My father was in Runnels Hospital in Sept/Oct 2013. On his first day there they put a known dying man into his room. He moaned in pain and died during the night. This was very depressing for my father who had to witness this. They put the man on the other side of the curtain farthest away from the door and so there was no way my father could be spared the dying process. The rooms are small, there is a curtain between beds with a few feet apart. The adjoining rooms share the bathroom and so there are four patients to one bathroom. STanding is not encouraged... you will see many people being rolled here and there on lifts to bathrooms. There is not enough nursing staff to ratio of patients. My father went in for rehab from a fall... on their watch he had a stroke, and later congestive heart failure. I complained to the nurse that he was having difficulty breathing and they said he was having panic attacks. When I called the rehab dr. an insisted on a chest xray, he was in congestive heart failure with fluid in his lungs. The doctors on staff visit the many patients once a week. I found the nursing and doctor staff to be inadequate for the amount of patients. They leave patients yelling and do not help them, the aides just ignore or posey in the patients who call out. Our experience was depressing. When we were able to move my father out we found a nice place McCerrick in Somerset. I would not recommend this facility. It was awful. - 1 star ...read more
