Why is your cat eating grass?

Cats have some strange habits, and their owners are often baffled while looking at their feline friends while wondering just what the hell they are thinking right now. Just one of these weird behaviors is eating grass: Most cats will, at some or other point, walk up to grass and start chewing on it. Why? Here’s more about why your cat might be eating grass and about whether or not you have to be worried about it. Reason #1: Nutritional Deficiency Is your cat getting everything they need through their regular diet? Ensure that they are getting a comprehensive diet – and double-check the label of your chosen cat food. Sometimes, cats might need supplements or some extra snacks to keep them healthy. Munching on blades of grass is just one way to replace nutrients in their body. Reason #2: Nausea Cats are part of nature, and they’ve long used nature to work for them. Just one of the tricks they have is eating grass. This seems like a strange behaviour at first, but if this is preceded by nausea or vomiting, then you can almost be sure that your cat is eating grass to induce vomiting. Don’t worry if this happens, just watch your cat’s health closely and let nature run its course. If the vomiting continues, then it’s advised that you take your cat to a vet. Do not, ever, try to give your cats human medication for medical ailments – this only puts them in further danger. Reason #3: Look Closer… Have a closer look at what your cat is eating: It might not be the grass itself that they are after. Instead, it could be the bugs between the grass (of course, cats love the hunt from time to time) or it could not be grass at all: There are many plants beneficial to cats, including catnip. 4 Most Common Nebraska Lawn Problems

If your lawn looks more brown than green, you’re probably feeling the blues. Brutal winters and scorching summers, and pests make lawn maintenance tricky in Nebraska. You don’t have to sit back and accept that your lawn looks more like a dessert wasteland than a lush oasis. 4 Most Common Nebraska Lawn Problems & How to Solve Them Crabgrass Crabgrass isn’t really a grass, but rather a weed. Nebraska lawns are often overcome with this pesky invader. It sticks out like a sore thumb and can do damage to any decent grass you may have. To treat crabgrass, try corn mean. It’s a natural, safer, and environmentally friendly alternative to chemicals. Apply it in the early spring and then fertilize as usual. Avoid cutting the grass too short, otherwise you’ll invite the crabgrass back. Grubs If your lawn is wilting and speckled with brown patches despite regular fertilizing and watering, you may have grubs. If you aren’t sure, get down on your hands and knees and pull up a chunk of grass; if you have these pests, there’s a good chance you’ll see them in the roots. Grubs eat away at grass roots and invite other pests that cause lawn problems, like moles. To get rid of them, apply beneficial nematodes (parasitic, microscopic worms that carry bacteria that kill off grubs). Bald Patches If you have random bald patches in your yard, tend to them quickly, otherwise weeds will take over, causing further damage and making your lawn look even more unsightly. To treat bald spots, dig up the damaged area and about 6 inches around it. Level off the soil and add some fertilizer to the spot. Lay seeds on top of the fertilizer or apply sod. Don’t forget to water the new planting regularly. Not Enough Sun Even grasses that are supposed to be shade-tolerant can fail to flourish without enough sunlight, leaving you with no grass at all. Instead of going grass with the tree trimming, consider planting grass alternatives in shady spots. Plants that flourish in shade include pachysandra, sweet woodruff, ferns, and vinca. These plants will create a beautiful display in your shady areas and require very little maintenance; a win-win for your landscape. Choosing the Perfect Pavers for Omaha Landscaping

Whether you’re installing a new pool deck, patio, walkway, or driveway, pavers are an excellent choice. They create a finished look like no other landscaping material can. They’re also very durable and come in a wide variety of colors and styles. However, while pavers are certainly the best choice for your hardscaping needs, choosing the best option can be tough. Below, we share some valuable tips that can help you choose the best pavers for your landscape. Choosing the Perfect Pavers for Landscaping Consider the Location The location of the pavers is an important consideration. If the area will be exposed to a lot of water and drainage is an issue, a permeable material is your best bet. Why? – Because water can flow through permeable pavers, which can minimize drainage problems. Think About the Texture Smooth, embossed, weathered; these are just some of the textures that patio pavers come in. The texture has a direct effect on the look and feel of the texture. It can also make the difference between a slippery surface and one that is slip-proof. If you’re installing pavers around a pool deck, consider choosing pavers with an embossed texture to prevent slips and falls; however, if you’re going for a sleek design in an area where slippage isn’t a concern, pavers with a smooth surface could be a good choice for you. Choose a Color Pavers come in so many different colors, including brown, tan, gray, and even red. When selecting a color, consider the look you are trying to achieve. If you want a streamlined look, consider a color that matches the exterior of your home. Want to make a bold statement, opt for a hue that is completely different than the color scheme of your façade. If you’d like your pavers to stand out, yet still tie into the look of your house, choose a paver that matches a standout feature of your home, such as the roof or the shutters. Warmer weather and longer days means that more people will be out and about. Impress your customers (both current and potential) by getting your landscape in order! Here are some helpful tips to get your commercial landscape ready for the summer season. Helpful Tips to Get Your Commercial Landscape Ready for SummerHave the Irrigation Systems Checked Now is the time to have your irrigation system checked. If it isn’t working properly, your customers are going to be greeted by a dried out, brown, and dead landscape – not exactly the impression you want to make. Have your irrigation system checked to ensure that it is running properly. Doing so will help keep your landscape lush, green, and beautiful all summer long. Clean It Up Get out there and clean up any renegade leaves that have collected on your lawn or in your flowerbeds during the fall and winter. Pull out any weeds that are starting to surface in your flowerbeds. Mulch your flowerbeds, too! It’s amazing what an incredible impact a freshly mulched landscape can make! Pest Control Everyone loves the warmth of summer – including pests. The last thing your customers want is to contend with a swarm of angry bees or see an army of ants crawling on your walls. Invest in pest control to make sure that your landscape is free of insects, rodents, and other pests that could negatively impact your landscape – and your business. Fertilize the Lawn Encourage the healthy growth of your lawn by fertilizing it. Have fertilizer applies throughout your lawn so that your grass is well nourished and ready to grow thick, green, and super lush. Fertilizing can also prevent the growth of crab crass, dandelions, and other types of weeds that can detract from the look of your lawn. Best Time to Mulch and the Importance of Mulching

There’s nothing more inviting than a well-maintained landscape. Of all the things you can do to maintain your landscape, mulching is one of the most important. Mulch makes flowerbeds look clean and uniform; however, it does more than add to the aesthetics. Mulch also helps to retain vital water for your plants, insulates plant roots from extreme temperatures, provides valuable nutrients, and protects plants from damage caused by pests and lawn care equipment. Yes, mulch certainly plays a big role in the health and beauty of your flower beds; however, before you just start tossing it down haphazardly, you want to make sure you are applying it properly. Here’s a look at some important tips that will ensure you are getting the most out of mulch. The Best Time to Lay Mulch The best time to add mulch to your flowerbeds is when the weather starts turning warm. Adding it while it’s still cold can delay plant growth, as it will insulate the soil. Wait until it’s hot and your plants won’t be able to absorb as many nutrients; plus, they will sustain damage from high temperature and the strong rays of the sun. Furthermore, if you have perennials planted in your flowerbeds, you’ll want to wait until they have started emerging. Applying it beforehand and you could end up burying them and prevent them from growing. Moisten the Soil Make sure your soil is moist before applying mulch. Doing so will assist the product in doing one of its most important jobs: water retention. Weed Before You Apply Mulch is great for weed control. Make sure you pull out unwanted weeds before you mulch. If you simply cover them, they’ll continue spreading and growing. Mulch is an important landscaping material. Make sure you are getting the most out of it by laying it at the right time and preparing the area before application. What To Look Out For In Your Lawn Mowing Service

The Professional Landcare Network, an industry group also known as Planet, found that Americans who turned to outsiders on average expected to spend $700 on mowing, edging and leaf cleanup last year and another $400 on lawn care, such as fertilizers and weed control. Here is the thing, lawn mowing services are popping up everywhere with little or no knowledge. Most just purchase a heavy duty mower and assume they know what they are doing. They offer a cheap price, and home-owner can’t resist, but signing up. Here is What To Look Out For In Your Lawn Mowing Service You may have never given much thought to the specific tasks your lawn mowing service should do when taking care of your yard. Look out for certain things when you have hired someone for turf maintenance, and make sure they understand your needs as they relate to your lawn. Certifications The company’s qualifications should be the first thing you examine. Owners and employees of a lawn mowing service should have the proper training and certifications. Services After you have checked the qualifications and training of a lawn mowing service, you should find out how they plan to take care of your grass. Maybe you expect them to only mow. If they offer a package of care tasks (such as mowing and trimming the grass from the edge of your yard), make sure to check that they perform the tasks they say they will. You need to learn a little bit about lawn care to make sure that your service does not do damage to your grass. They should not cut it too short. They should let clippings lie unless they are excessive. Mulching the clippings is a healthy way to deliver nutrients to your turf. Experience Their website or paperwork should tell you how many years they have been in business. You may want to ask for referrals. If your lawn does not look healthy, you may want to ask if they provide services for diagnosing and treating insects, fungus and weed overgrowth. Think about asking for a treatment plan or contract from your lawn mowing service so that you are aware of when certain it Goodfellas Enterprises LLC Goodfellas Enterprises, LLC, a locally owned and operated company, specializes in all aspects of lawn care and landscape maintenance in Bellevue, NE and the surrounding areas. Spring Lawn Care Tips

Spring lawn care is much less time intensive than fall lawn care. If you prepared your lawn properly in the late fall, there should be very little for you to do once the weather begins to get warm again. The most important part of spring lawn care is to make sure that the lawn has plenty of opportunity to gently come back to life during the early spring months. If you do it right, the sun and soil will do most of the work for you. Spring Lawn Care Tips Begin by clearing up any debris, sticks or leaves on your lawn. Use a leaf rake and collect the debris in a garden bag. Tune up your mower. Change the oil, air filter and spark plug. Clean the top and undercarriage, removing dirt and grass clippings-just be sure to detach the spark plug wire before working around the cutting blade. Don’t flip a gas mower over to clean underneath; simply lift one side and brush away dried grass. If dried grass has hardened, loosen with a hand trowel or putty knife. Sharpen the mower blade, and replace it if it has large nicks or gouges. Cut your grass If you haven’t cut the grass during the winter, give it its first spring mow when it is about 2-3 inches high. It is important not to cut any more than one third of the current length, so set the blades to high. Through late April and May you can reduce the height gradually, but always sticking to the one third rule. Trim the edges of your lawn Trimming the edges of your lawn will help to ensure you have crisp lines to clearly show that you care for your lawn. Cut lawn edges with a half-moon edging iron or a garden trimmer to ensure they look neat and well-shaped. Aerate your lawn Aeration perforates the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate to the grass roots. This aids root growth and will help create a healthy lawn. To aerate small lawns you can use a garden fork or manual aerator. Turn it back to front, insert it in the ground and carefully withdraw without wiggling it. Repeat every 2-4 inches. Otherwise, give Goodfellas Enterprises LLC in Bellevue, NE a call and let them take care of it for you. Use lawn feed If you have some bare patches then you may want to sow some grass seeds or use a patch repair product. If you’re spreading a large area with feed and seed, use a spreader. Benefits of Corn Gluten On Your Yard

Corn gluten meal is a natural yard treatment that is derived from the part of the corn kernel that is not used when making corn meal. It is high in protein and nitrogen, which can make it a beneficial and natural lawn fertilizer, but corn gluten meal is more commonly used to control weeds. Corn gluten meal is also about 10 percent nitrogen by weight, meaning 100 pounds of corn gluten contains 10 pounds of nitrogen. Corn Meal vs. Corn Gluten Meal When treating your yard with corn meal, it’s important to use the right product. Corn meal and corn gluten meal (CGM) originate from whole kernels of corn, but they’re used for very different purposes. The corn meal you use as a coating for food is ground up corn, while corn gluten meal is a byproduct of this process. Although the two can sometimes look very similar depending on the milling process, you cannot substitute corn meal for corn gluten meal as a lawn treatment because corn meal used in food preparation will not suppress weeds. How does corn gluten work? Corn gluten inhibits seeds from forming roots during germination. The application must be carefully timed before germination of crabgrass seeds, for instance. The seed will germinate and form a shoot, but not a root. Prior to germination, a short drying period is needed to kill the germinated, but rootless, plant. If conditions are too wet during germination, the plant will recover and form a root. Corn gluten provides no post-emergent weed control. If seeds have already germinated, a late application of corn gluten will only serve as fertilizer for the weeds. Applications of corn gluten should be timed with rainfall. If it doesn’t rain within five days of application, it needs to be watered in with 1/4 inch of water. A dry period of a day or two must follow the watering in to prevent the seedling from growing another root. Downside of Using Corn Gluten Corn gluten is costlier than conventional pre-emergent herbicides. Because multiple applications are often required, you could be handling hundreds or even thousands of pounds of the product, depending on the size of the yard. Sprayable, liquid forms of corn gluten can make applications easier but are still costly. Effectiveness Corn gluten meal does not provide dramatic results initially. For each consecutive year you apply it, however, you should see better weed suppression than you did the previous year. Corn gluten meal is effective only against seeds, not established plants. Weeds that are already growing will not be affected by the application of corn gluten meal, but any seeds produced by these plants immediately before or after application should not sprout. How To Make Flu Bomb Recipe?

This year’s flu season is now more intense than any since the 2009 swine flu pandemic and still getting worse, federal health officials said on Friday. Nationally, the number of people falling ill with flu is increasing. More worrying, the hospitalization rate — a predictor of the death rate — has just jumped. It is now on track to equal or surpass that of the 2014-2015 flu season. In that year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates, 34 million Americans got the flu, 710,000 were hospitalized and about 56,000 died. Cold & Flu Getting a cold or the flu is the worst!! It stops you right in your tracks. Then you usually drag yourself to the doctor, only to wait in a germ infested waiting room and be sneezed on by other contagious patients. You are given a prescription that can have side effects which only add to your symptoms……if that’s possible. Why not try something different? Why not give essential oils a try this time around? What do you have to lose? Oh, maybe just the FLU!! Who wouldn’t want to rid themselves of that and it’s chills, fever, & aches?! The Cold and Flu Bomb Recipe This is a basic, useful essential oils recipe that combats a range of symptoms, including cough, congestion, and more. To start, you’ll need a 10ml glass roller bottle. Make sure it is glass. Essential oils are not meant to be stored in plastic. Fill your roller bottle with the following oils: 7 drops of lemon 7 drops of lavender 5 drops of oregano 5 drops of peppermint 5 drops of thyme 5 drops of eucalyptus Once you’ve added these oils, top the rest of the bottle off with a carrier oil. Note that over time, the body can build immunities to certain essential oils, similar to how you would build an immunity to an antibiotic. That’s why it is good to mix up the oils if you plan on using the blend for an extended period of time. Also, everyone’s body reacts differently. So what might work great for someone else, might not provide the same effect for you. A few ideas to supplement your cold and flu bomb recipe are frankincense, orange, cinnamon, and rosemary. Simply replace one of the oils above with two to three drops of one of these oils. Once you’re finished crafting your recipe, apply the rollerball to the bottom of your feet a few times a day until your symptoms cease. ...read more

Deicing vs Anti-Icing: What’s the Difference?

Melting snow can be a welcomed occurrence in the heart of an Omaha winter. But if bitter cold hits again BAM, ice! And, we all know ice can be more dangerous than snow for driving and walking. That’s why it’s important to manage ice before, during and after the storm. Some Omaha Snow Removal companies talk about deicing, some talk about anti-icing. Deicing vs Anti-Icing: What’s the Difference? Along with the variety of equipment options, deicing and anti-icing chemicals can help managers ensure safe, snow-and-ice-free surfaces. Granular materials have become a popular and effective method for maintaining safe conditions during and after a storm. But to better manage snow and ice, managers need to understand the difference between deicing vs anti-icing. Deicing Deicing is the reactive application of ice-control products to driving or walking surfaces to melt existing snow and ice. Crews perform deicing after snow-removal operations to melt remaining snow and ice. Anti-Icing Anti-icing is the proactive application of melting products to driving or walking surfaces before a storm. Anti-icing helps prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement, allowing workers to clear the surfaces more easily. Anti-icing can create safe winter conditions and is a cost-effective alternative to deicing. Managers cannot rely on one method for deicing and anti-icing because each chemical and storm is different. Goodfellas Enterprises LLC At Goodfellas Enterprises LLC in Omaha, we’ve found that BOTH methods of ice management are needed for the safety solutions. We strive to provide the best ice management and proactive deicing services to suit your business. Then we’re on your site during and after the storm to keep ice from building up. In other words, our commercial snow removal and ice management services include: Pre-treating to aid in prevention of ice building up with anti-icing agents. Choosing The Best Snow Removal Company

The winter has arrived and although it may take a storm or two to realize the benefits of a snow removal company, you are not going to want to be left with endless hours of shoveling this winter. Taking the time to properly choose a snow removal company will not only help you find the right fit but it will also give the snow removal company a chance to get to know your property and your priorities before the first big storm hits. But, how do you choose the right company? There are a lot of companies out there and there are a lot of things to consider when choosing the right company. We have compiled a short list to help you make your decision. Tips To Choosing The Best Snow Removal Company It may sound simple, but finding a snow removal service you can count on in heavy snowfall requires a bit of research. Research, research, research! Research is great way to get company names. You can research all they have to offer, as well as reviews for those particular companies. Make sure you do not just go with the first company you see; you need to research more than one company. This will give you more of an idea of what you want. Are they reputable? Only choose a company that has a high BBB rating. You can check the company’s business and customer reviews online at bbb.org. Check references and ask around – other customers are the best way to determine how reliable a company is. Do NOT shop strictly based on price Looking for a reputable company who has years of experience can save you many headaches. Experienced companies have seen almost every snow scenario and can help you tackle most of the problems your property will face. A reputable company will hard work in difficult conditions, have the required equipment and just as importantly, the insurance necessary to do the job right. Check other services A good thing to do when you are researching is to see what other services they have to offer. It is ideal to pick a company that does lawn care as well. That way you do not have to find a lawn care service in the spring and summer, you will be prepared for the upcoming months. Do they have insurance? The company should be fully insured in case of any damage to your property, residential or commercial. If you are hiring a commercial snow removal company, they need to ensure (and insure) the safety of your employees and the path from their cars to the office building. I really hope these tips have helped you. Let Goodfellas Enterprises LLC help you with your snow removal needs this winter. ...read more

Commercial Snow Removal Mistakes

Mistakes with commercial snow removal can cost property mangers a great deal of money, not to mention the potential harm that can come from unsafe conditions. As you are already aware, snow removal involves a lot of additional work besides getting your snow boots wet. You also have to stay on top of your paperwork. That is where many small businesses get stressed out. Here are the a few common mistakes that commercial snow removal companies are making:Poor customer communication Every industry is guilty of it. You spend all day doing similar kinds of jobs, so after a while, you start to make assumptions about what your clients’ needs. This works out great for a while because you are a professional, and you know what you are talking about. But, you will inevitably run into someone who wants something out of the ordinary and maybe tried to tell you or just expected you to read their mind. If you do not communicate with each client about their expectations, you could run into big problems that could lose you time, clients, and money. Not billing in a timely manner  Billing in a timely manner is crucial to your commercial snow removal business. When your client pays you, it signals a job well done and another happy customer. Yet, many snow removal businesses struggle to bill in a timely manner. Weather Forecast Relying on weather forecasts in the Omaha and the surrounding areas is very difficult. The saying is true, wait 24 hours and you will have a different forecast in the area. It’s best to stay on top of the forecast to be prepared. Choosing The Wrong Equipment For The Job You wouldn’t bring a shovel to a job that requires feet of snow removal. This calls for a truck and a plow, especially on a large commercial properties with multiple parking lots, sidewalks and driveways. It takes a whole fleet of properly maintained and prepared equipment to handle all levels of snow and ice accumulation on a commercial property. Consider Goodfellas Enterprises LLC For The Coming Winter When you have snow and ice on your Omaha commercial property, you want it removed now. When it comes to shoveling, always try to push snow aside rather than lift it. If you have to lift, try to lift with your legs, not back. During this time of year, more back injuries are caused by lifting snow with a shovel. Chemical de-icers will melt snow, so I won’t have to shovel it Actually, salt isn’t about melting. It’s about lowering water’s freezing point below the usual 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius)—a phenomenon chemists call freezing point depression. It doesn’t melt the ice, but makes ice release its grip on the pavement Once the ice has hold of the pavement, de-icers can’t help much Chemical de-icers are aids only, not the solution to the problem. Using hot water to melt ice is a better idea for the environment Hot water can in fact freeze faster than cold water for a wide range of experimental conditions. Hot water will eventually refreeze, often times causing invisible black ice.
