Will Assisted Living Communities in NC take Medicaid?
When you are looking for Assisted Living Communities, you may be wondering if they accept Medicaid to help you cover the out-of-pocket costs associated with assisted living. While most facilities will accept Medicaid, there are some services it applies to and others that it doesn’t. Keep reading to see what is covered and what to expect when looking for affordable assisted living in NC. Assisted Living Costs and Funding Options The truth of the matter is that a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia will eventually need assisted care or memory care. Over time, basic activities like going to the bathroom or doing dishes become difficult. It is also very common for the home of a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia to become unsafe. At a certain point, care at home may become difficult, and a strain on the family and the move to an assisted living community in NC is inevitable. The costs of assisted living in NC When families start doing research, they typically wonder, how much assisted living cost does. What is covered by Medicaid? How do you break down these costs? Many variables affect cost like • Geography • Private v public living • Level of care needed Generally, assisted living is less expensive than memory care, as it is less time intensive in terms of staffing. But why is that? What is the difference between assisted living and memory care? Physical Differences Between Memory Care and Assisted Living First, the physical design of a memory care facility is designed to meet the needs of Alzheimer’s patients. There is typically a focus on creating an area that is intuitive and non-restrictive, yet safe. For example, many memory care facilities utilize circular hallways instead of dead-end halls to ease the anxiety a patient may have when encountering an unfamiliar dead-end. There are also no individual kitchens in memory care like there are in assisted living. This is because of safety concerns There is a significant emphasis on safety at memory care facilities and assisted living facilities to utilize more of a home-style layout or feel. Assisted living communities are typically apartment-style building with many common areas and room. Assisted living facilities are still safe, but not as secure as memory care facilities. On average, you can expect to pay $3,700 per month for assisted living and $5,400 per month to reside in a memory care unit. Again, this is just an average, and price may increase, or decrease based on the location and level of care needed. Assisted Living Community NC and Medicaid Most residents of NC pay for assisted living without assistance from Medicaid, through private long-term care insurance or personal savings. There have been recent updates to the Medicare laws where there is a Medicare option to partner with private insurers. This partnership will expand supplemental benefits and allow assisted living communities in NC to be designated as a ‘home.’ What does this mean? Well, a substantial amount of the cost of living at an assisted living or memory care facility will be covered by insurance. If you are outside of NC, the states that subsidize assisted living services employ Medicaid 1915c waivers. There are other states that lower the cost for assisted living via including Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs), taxable and tax-exempt bonds, and other programs. Support for low-income seniors There is a program called the ‘State/County Special Assistance Program’ (SCSAP) that provides elderly and low-income North Carolina residents financial assistance to pay for the costs of assisted living room and board. This is a good option if you need help paying for room and board associated with assisted living. There may be some other contributing factors to your eligibility for this program such as • Age – Are you 65 years or older? • Residency – Have you been a resident of NC for 90 days or longer before applying? • Medical Documentation – Has your health care provider documented that you need assisted living? • Financial Status – Are you a low-income senior? Do you receive SSI? Do you have less than $2000 in assets? • Facility – Is the facility you want to live in authorized to receive payments from the SCSAP program?
