Computer issues and economic woes

What do you do if your computer has problems? For some people the answer would be "buy a new one." But with an unstable economy, many people will be looking for alternatives. One option is to "fix it" whether it is a hardware or a software problem. While software issues are generally inexpensive to fix, some hardware issues are very much a money pit. You can fix one piece reasonable cheaply, but that forces a replacement of 2 other components and so on. Economic hardware repairs include: replacing the power supply, replacing the hard drive or a CD/DVD drive, resoldering or replacing power jacks on notebooks, or upgrading memory. Money pit repairs can be found when replacing the motherboard or processor and sometimes the video card. Sometimes the computer's case is the problem as well. Always get a quote from your technician before authorizing work to be done. And a reputable company will call you first if anything else needs to be done that would affect your bill. Simple repairs and upgrades can prolong the life of your PC without breaking the bank. Getting virus and spyware infections removed can greatly improve your computer's speed and functionability. Adding RAM can make a huge difference in performance as well. For repairs that are not economically sound consider what the computer's uses are. For internet surfing, homework and other basic functions, a refurbished computer may be all that is needed. With tough economic times come more used computers, some at incredible bargains.  At approximately half the price of a new PC, maybe the built in webcam and other bells and whistles of a new PC aren't worth the difference in money that could otherwise be used for fuel or groceries. There are options out there to help get through these tough times. . . even in computerland. . . .and everyone should know what their options are. Ask your technician what your options are, ask them about long term and short term fixes, and weight the pros and cons of 1) fixing your computer 2) buying a refurbished computer and 3) buying a new computer. ...read more
